p.1 #1 · Winter Lake

Here are some photos taken in Vermont last weekend. I have been trying out some B&W conversions to try to create a more dramatic effect. Comments welcome and appreciated.

These are nice scenes well-suited for BW or color.
First two sets of images "feel" tilted down right, but this could be the receding shoreline.
I like the comp in the first two. But I think you need to restore some shadow detail; the distant trees are just too dark and a bit muddled looking.
Second two are also nice compositions. I'd again bring back just a bit more detail in the tree on the left and crop some off from the top. You have some nice angles and lines formed by the kayak and dock leading the eye into the image.
Last two: again, shadow detail. The kayak feels too cut off for my taste.

1,2 have very nice colors and look very crisp. I don't like the dock leading to the right and the sun off on the left. It feels like competition between right and left. I agree with Scott that more details in trees would be great. This is hard to achieve without blending or ndgrad.

3, 4 for me should have been landscape. With alll of the tree in and more space to the right where the kayak points.

5,6 the kayak is pointing at an odd angle and there is an object in the middle of the lake that is distracting. The flow is not good.

Great colors and features they just need more attention to composition for my taste.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that in the first photo there are some competing elements - the sun to the left and the dock on the right. I felt that the sun's rays were guiding you to the dock but understand that it might be distracting.

In the second set (vertical) my wide angle lens resulted in an unnatural tilted tree so I cropped it out, I will experiment some more. Thanks again...
