I'm starting to get to the stage where I need help to organize/sort/file my images. Right now I just name by "YYYY/MM/DD shot number" so they're in chronological order, but there are too many for me to sort through and find easily. I want a quick way to keyword, I guess. I don't have PS, but use DPP and GIMP.
People recommend Extensis but I can't justify the cost yet, as my imaging is a sideline.
There's also MS Expression Media, which used to be iView Media Pro. PhotoMechanic does keywording but doesn't create catalogs, from what I remember. ACDSee Pro seems to have DAM functionality now.
Cool. Will go check out some of these and come on back. DAMbook authors were just running workshops with a friend of mine. Should have checked them there...
I have been using MS Expression Media successfully for several years. When MS bought out the old iView Media the made one last bastardized version of iView Media with the MS icons. It was crap. The new Expression Media is quite nice.
Currently working with MS Expression Media. I bought the suite, still messing around with it. The max catalog tops out at 1.7 GB, so I've had to create numerous catalogs, rather than one master like I had hoped for.
I don't like much else of aperture compared to the competition but I find it a very good substitute for a real database and use it to catalogue my processed files. I've used extensis in the past ... and it drove me nuts! There were so many problems for me with metadata that I gave up on it.
With a bit ( a lot? ) of patience ... the makers of PhotoMechanic are working (slowly) on a cataloguing app. If it is comparable to their current product ... it may be worth waiting for.
