Really nice sharpness on his face; and I like the shallower DOF.
I also like how the light accentuates the whiskers.
I do think it'd be better to have a bit more space above and below - so that the nose is not sitting on the bottom edge, and the ears aren't cut off.
Keep posting!
I'm with Carrol, I think this is an AWESOME composition, different, unique and captures the focus on a dog amidst something interesting, i.e., dog being a dog (he almost looks like a wolf in there too). Although we see 100s of "staged" photos here, I'm a huge fan of the candid (life?) shots that happen when people and animals just do what they do.
But severing the photo, on the bottom, right at the tip of the nose is distracting. I am fairly certain that was the shot that just happened though, so I'm guessing you don't have room to spare?
I wonder if you cropped in tighter, maybe to the center of the bridge of the nose, how that would look? Maybe not good, but who knows ... since the ears are cropped off too, that might work.

Your right this was a shot as it happened and I have no room to spare. We rescued Whylee at three years of age and suspect she may have some coyote in her. I'm still trying to get the crop right in the viewfinder but I still find I over or under compensate for the 95% view.
Thank you for the suggestion of a tighter crop. I tried it but it wasn't working.
