p.1 #1 · EF 500 f4 IS & Lowepro Nature Trekker AWII

Anyone out there using a Lowepro Nature Trekker AWII backpack for toting around (or carrying on a plane) their gear including a 1D body attached to a EF 500mm f/4 IS USM lens, plus other stuff of course..

I have read that this pack will fit in the overhead bins of larger aircraft....

thanks

Mike

I have the backpack you mentioned but it never left my house, let alone going on the plane. I use it to store my gear though . Instead, I carry my stuff on various trips (even out-of-the-country) where I need my long gear in an MP-1 from Moose Peterson. The hood of the 500mm is reversed for traveling, of course. Although the monopod can fit in there but I normally check that in.

No, that's MP-1. I doubt I can fit that much gear in the Nature Trekker, which is way bulkier because of the padding. The close-cell foam padding of the MP-1 is placed only for the strategic sections where they count. Professional grade gear is actually tough and can easily withstand a certain amount of "usage" and it doesn't have to be babied, at least not all the time.

You can google their web site, only if you are interested and read more. I don't have any relation with MP whatsoever and I care less how many bags/backpacks they sell, BTW. I just happened to buy a used copy on FM and I really enjoy using it. Brand new, their bags/backpacks are expensive, easily 2-3 times more than Lowepro's. You have been warned.

Andy Biggs designed that new bag/backpack; he stops by from time to time on FM. MR made a reference to MP-1 there as well. Yes, he is right, the MP-1 doesn't have a full-fledge harness that makes it less comfortable on long treks. I use a collapsible roller for carrying that in and around airport terminals, which has worked just fine. Mike, I would look into that Kiboko bag, too, if I were you.

the KIBOKO CAMERA BAG looks mighty nice. Will definitely consider it if Santa brings me the 500!

A 500 with camera attached will not fit in the Nature Trekker AW II.

It'll fit a 300 f2.8 with camera + 1.4/2x easily with hood reverse but with hood on, it's a stretch.

A 500 will definitely not fit, maybe without camera.
