p.1 #1 · Cloning in CS4

Is it me or have I got a problem~?

Whenever I select the clone tool in CS4 it remembers what I last cloned and as I move the brush over the image the preview tool shows it even if since you used it you have done other things to the image. It is driving me crazy. How do you get the tool to forget what it last cloned until you select a new sample? Every time I select the tool it does this.

The healing brush does the same.

Of course if you don't have this problem this won't make sense.

I don't have a clue, Paul.
I would check and/or reset preferences as a start.

I think this is the way it's supposed to work and the way it's always worked in prior versions. You have to resample to select a new source. Only difference with CS4 is that it gives you a preview of of the source, whereas with CS3 and prior it was guesswork until you actually clone.

Fair enough - but I hate it!

I accept the benefit - but for goodness sake it should at least cancel when you deselect the tool!

?? As mentioned this is the way it's always worked. As far as closing the tool doing a reset - how would you do that given Photoshop allows you to use keyboard to swap out tools on the fly: like spacebar to pan, Ctl-Shift-Space to zoom - that kinda stuff. I'd sure hate to give up that functionality!

Well - maybe CS3 is like that. But CS2, once you leave the clone tool "forgets" what you cloned. CS4 remembers (which ain't a problem in itself - but as there is a preview you see the clone source being dragged across the screen next time you use the tool - which inevitably will not be for the same area).

In CS2 you could still use the space bar to pan and it remembered the source - but not if you switched properly to a different tool

I am just curious, Paul. How is the "unforgotten source" worse than getting the error window telling you that you haven't selected the source? Isn't it just a matter of doing an alt/opt-click to reset the source? You would have to do this anyway if the source point was reset.

Also, as you get used to it you may find some new advantages. For example, you can activate the clone source palette and store up to 5 source points. You can also do a alt/opt-shift while clicking and moving the cursor to fine-tune where the clone image is placed (it moves the "to" instead of the "from").

I guess I am just an old dog having to learn new tricks! But I do find it disconcerting, especial with a large clone brush as you move it across the image. At least you only got the error message if you made a mistake.

But it is the only thing I don't like (so far )

I agree. They fixed it. But they fixed it worse.

Try this:

Window/clone source/uncheck show overlay

Paul ... relax and give it a little time ... the changes are really useful. You can get much more precise results with less work.

Yes - for some things it is very useful - just not always But as I can turn it off - I'm happy.

Who knows

You're welcome, I was in the same situation than you and was in a hurry to finish a job, so I was happy to find the solution from somebody.

OK, I just got CS4 and the problem I'm experiencing with the clone tool is that when I make the brush sz bigger I lose visibilty to parts of the circle! When I decrease the sz I'll see the whole circular brush. Anyone have a clue on this? Thanks.

Start by updating your video card driver whether or not it is supported by CS4.
If that doesn't work try Preferences/performance and uncheck 'enable Open GL drawing'. Some say to turn off all check boxes under advanced settings for Open GL, but leave Enable Open GL drawing checked. That did not work for me
If that doesn't work. you might need a new graphics board to solve that problem and also get all the ooomph of CS4.
If your board is supported by CS4, it should show up in the bliank space under Pref/performance/gpu settings. Strangely, sometimes my board is recognized and at other times it is not. Good work Adobe.

tomhh, thanks for your help but alas it din't work! My 6800 nVidia card is recognized, I updated the driver from nVidia to one from Oct 2008 and just tried your check boxes, etc. routine. I guess I may need to update the video card. Seems odd to me that this is happening (only partial brush shows up). Thanks again, Bob Ring

That is why I won't upgrade until I have to. Vista and Cs3 have made my life more complicate that it should. Cs2 and XP were perfect.

OK, can CSPS4 work with a 32mb video card in my Lenovo T42 laptop at work? Can the video processing be turned off or directed back to the processor? The DOF mapping feature is something I'd love to have in my work, medical photography had a patient this AM that the images would have benefited from increased DOF.

I noticed this "feature" too and it makes me batty. (I also really, really want to figure out how to tell Bridge to show me only camera raw files, not the PSDs and JPEGs I'm making in the same folder.)

I'll be implementing Nicole's fix this evening....
