I've looked over these a hundred times now.
I keep thinking that the book will be sitting on the table "CLOSED" most of the time.
Closed until someone opens it of course
So you want an image that is colorful and decorative IMHO
Something that draws your attention to it and is a conversation piece.
For that reason my pick may be different than others.
I have intentionally not read the other comments as I didn't want their opinions to sway me one way or the other. And to be honest > their opinion doesn't really matter < It's must me, number 1 son that really REALLY matters
I am going with two pics for your consideration
Pic 1 - # 8 Is bright, Cheerful, and goes with about any decor
From a distance it's a beautiful bright yellow flower. But when you look close
You get the nice surprise of a grasshopper inside the flora. I can hear most
people commenting at the house >> Oh look theirs a big in there
I think it's a great conversation starter about the book
Pic 2 - # 7 is one of those awwwwwe shots of parent feeding baby and has impact.
Hi! I've already made my choice, but Ant's discussion of a cover as decor or conversation starter made me wonder. Have you surveyed local bookstores to see what sells? Now I know that commercial interests may be not your primary consideration, however most publishing houses have marketing departments that spend a lot of time and money trying to assess a book covers appeal. Just a thought....mike

I like 10 most. I think it would look great as a book cover
Now to everyone - - thank you all for all your help. Due to the wildfires & fire storms here in Sylmar I'm really exhausted & drained. I evacuated the horses in the middle of the night after fighting for our home for over 6 hours. We hosed trees & the barn - the yard etc etc. I even woke up the next door family who were sweetly sleeping & no one saw fit to wake up at 2 am. They have children, a dog & two horses....
We're fine for all those who may wonder. We were spared. But the neighbor down by the barn who shares fence with the sleeping family - - well the sleeping family have an old dead wood fence which caught on fire. So my other neighbor had to put it out (sleeping family was sleeping....). This fence is within 10 yards of my old wood barn which also is very dry due to several years of drought. And this year we've had 117 degrees F down under the breezeway of the barn..... So scary.
On the other side several other neighbors had trees on fire. One in perfect line to yet another neighbor who has a huge dead pine tree in her yard - - with a thick layer of dead & dry pine needles all over her yard. If that had caught fire - our home & the barn would today be gone. Luckily we were hosing in every direction to that went OK.
We had embers flying all over in the 70mph winds - - it was nasty. My eyes are still hurting & irritated. I kept having to clean them out with cold water. They were burning.
We're about 1 minute from the mobile home trailer park here in Sylmar by car. When the propane tanks started exploding - - that's when I evacuated the horses as they were my job. My daughter's was the cats & my husband had the dogs. Since he chose to stay & hose everything down so did the dogs. As it turns out our daughter had no idea were we were so she ended up going to bed. And here I was calling like a nut to get to either of them.
Anyhow - - the fire department managed to stop the fire before our homes were attacked. We're all fine - just exhausted... Now I'm dealing with the cleanup job with is huge. But - - all of us alive & all our pets fine is all that matters.
If I don't seem to catch your threads for the next week or so - - please know I have a huge job to do. Now add that I have to finish the book so I can get it to my father.
Result from the four forums in which I posted this... - - Oh I know you want it....
# 1 - - overwhelming win for # 10 - Energetic Snowy Egret
# 2 - - # 6 - Avocet fishing in Golden light (only 24 points behind)
# 3 - - # 1 - Little One my resting resident squirrel
# 4 - - # 3 - The very Japanese inspired GBH fishing
Thank you all for your help - I am very grateful.....
Lil - who's going to try to get a good nights rest so I can get back to this book in the morning.....
