I'm with Ian, if you can't stretch to the full house 24/28-70 2.8 version, the 28-105 3.5-4.5 is a superb little lens, I had one for 2 years before my 24-70 arrived and in IQ terms (obviously the L is way ahead on build quality) there's really not a lot in it, there's a slight nod to sharpness with the L, and I find the red channel seems to be less prone to clipping, but that's about it, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.
