Does anyone know what the difference between the two lenses is?

It seems that most people have the mk II version and that the mk I goes for slightly cheaper on the used market, but is the mk II really a better lens?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dont know but the specs on the canon museum are much the same save for the mk2 being lighter.

how cheap are these? if you were looking for something 28-XX then why not think about the 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM , the mk2 is slightly beter than the mk1 (better apature blade setup)

Or its baby brother the 24-85 usm

I'm with Ian, if you can't stretch to the full house 24/28-70 2.8 version, the 28-105 3.5-4.5 is a superb little lens, I had one for 2 years before my 24-70 arrived and in IQ terms (obviously the L is way ahead on build quality) there's really not a lot in it, there's a slight nod to sharpness with the L, and I find the red channel seems to be less prone to clipping, but that's about it, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

Hi,

I have a MKII version. As I understand it, optically the MKI and MKII are the same, but the MKI version is just a bit bulkier and weighs more. I like mine a lot. It has surprisingly good IQ and you can pick one up for absolute peanuts. I think I paid $80 for mine.

If my memory serves me well the MKI has metal gears for the AF mechanics, and the MKII has plastic gears. Optically they are the same.

The 28-70/3.5-4.5 is optically superior to the 28-105. Indeed, it is optically superior to every non-L zoom lens Canon ever made in the same focal length range, and is on par with the Ls.

Thanks for all the replies!

I just bought the mk I version, so let's hope it's just as sharp as those butterfly photos, cause damn they are sharp!

Just picked up the 28-70/3.5-4.5 Mk II, a 50mm 1.8 Mark I (!) and a EOS 650 - all for $45! Forgive the boast, but that little zoom really is sharp! (Got 'em all on Craigslist)

Pilgrim, damn good score.

I have the Mk II, it's a great lens. everytime I think of getting rid of it I remember how well it has done for me (I bought it new in like 1990 or something) and I can't part with it. I have a 24-70 2.8L now so I rarely use the little 28-70 but it's still a great lens. Market value on a nice II version is $200+ I think.

50 1.8 mk1 - another great one. These are worth having, esp. if you can pick them up for cheap $.

EOS 650 and 50 1.8 mk 1 were my first Canon 35mm gear, bought new back in 1988 or so.
