Well, my "work" is really lawyering, but hey, nothing creative came to me in that regard. But it allows me the money/freedom to do what I really love ~ taking photos of animals in need. I volunteer every couple of months to raise awareness for the cats/kittens down at a high volume local animal control (for Petfinder mostly).

Not sure whether everyone already knows this, but there is prejudice in the adoption world and black cats/kittens and dogs/pups usually languish and/or are put down. I always try to give the black cats some extra time. I spent a good hour with a few of them in the volunteer rest area.

This image tries to capture the fun, challenge and creativity of trying to get in there, do something a little different, and get these guys adopted ... also the 700 missed shots to every "money shot" ... it's fun work, but sad (many I shoot don't make it), but some DO get adopted too!

This is O'Doyle.

Without being able to see her little face, she looks very much like the little silky black girl we adopted from the Humane Society a few months back. Hard to be predjudiced about a black kitty when all she wants to do it lick the tip of your nose. My husband was a gonner......seduced and wrapped around her little fuzzy finger in seconds.

I really dig this shot. The color contrast is nice. Wish I could see the face however.

Yeah, I guess the concept for me was that he was looking back, towards the ball ... bringing the eye back there. Never know if it's gonna be well received or work though!

Thanks for the comments and time guys!

You could of put the cat on your law book and got both points across, I see all to many cats in the wild left by people who think oh someone will give them a home but thats not the case, the sad part is they have to fend for thereself and usually end up dying or killed by coyote's, there is a big problem with cats look at Louisiana they have cats that are native wild but have been taking over homes and building from the flood so now they trap them and spade them and release them. Only the point is sooner or later the species will be alliminated. A sad ending.

A flash would have really become useful here.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I love the composition and concept. But like so many others, would love to see the cat's expression. Maybe try a mirror behind the ball?!?

Great shot,
Chad

Thanks for all the comments! It's a very hard place to uh, compose, it being a step above (or parallel to) a prison in lighting, backgrounds, storage, necessities, etc. Think more along the lines of journalistic/street photography.

I think it's kind of cruel to use a flash too (most animals), because even if I'm not blinding the animal in front of me, it will one of the others (they are literally stacked on top of each other - or in the employee room, all over the place) ... plus flashing lights would further scare the bejeezuz out of them. So then they are going to be fearful of me, and I don't want that.

It's kind of a "take what comes" kind of photo shooting experience, make the best of the impromptu moments, but maybe I can do something more elaborate if I get the employee room again, with a bit of time.

I don't think I have one with a "face" with a particuarly interesting composition, but I will see!

Thanks for your time ... and helpful comments.

Hi Carolyn, Sometimes a shot just does something special for you. Ya know? This is my favorite shot of the week. Thank you.

BTW: I have an all black rescue cat. Her name is Jinx.
