Thank you, Tom. I appreciate your comments and I'm glad you like this. I'll keep the B & W as my entry.

All best wishes,

Endre

Great shot, Endre! For what it's worth, I definitely vote for the B&W. Your initial instincts are usually right.

One thing I have noticed is that in these shots, its pretty damn clean!! How or where did you manage to find such clean spots in the City?? Very interesting finds

I don't know about your town, Steve, but people don't seem to litter very much here in LA. There are places, here and there, to be sure but these spots aren't among them. Chinatown is a big tourist attraction so all the businesses keep their storefronts very clean. You can see a bit of litter far away in the long shot of the back part of that building and you can see that the trash can had a lot of stuff in it next to the guy waiting for the bus. This is all in Downtown LA which in may parts is being revitalized by lots of new construction of high-end apartments and condos as well as art and performance centers. I still don't feel all that safe wandering around there at night with a bunch of very expensive camera gear but there also weren't that many people out and about either.

All the best,

Endre

Love the simple composition of this scene. The lighting and conversion are spot on. The subject screams both lonliness and peacefulness.

Another nearly-impossible-to-compete-against shot from Strad

Thanks so much, Chad! Your comments are always too kind. I'm so glad you like it.

I don't know about "nearly-impossible-to-compete-against". There are many here who regularly post really great shots. That's what keeps this forum interesting.

All best wishes,

Endre

One of my very favorites in this Assignement, Endre. Great light and very urban subject. It seems to me that the guy may have missed a bus or two. He may need the rest more than a bus.

Very well done.

PS: Thank you for your help with my entry alternatives. Much appreciated.

Thanks so much, Kaj! I'm really glad you like this. In reality, I think this guy was several busses short of a ride. Poor thing. It didn't seem that there were any busses going by at that time of night and when I passed by him about a half hour later on my way home, he was still there squirming around in the same place. It's good that the night was warm so at least he wasn't cold and therefore too uncomfortable. The big homeless shelter is not too far away from there so he may have eventually found his way there.

I'm always happy to give help whenever it might be useful. I'm very happy you appreciated my comments. I love your shot this week!

All the best,

Endre

Very nice shot. Exceptionally good light indeed.

One of the interesting thing about an assignment like this is that it -- to some extent anyway -- reflects peoples conception of the topic. Many of the entries for "urban" are negative. Do we all have such negative views of our urban environment?

Thanks so much, Paul! I'm delighted that you like it so much. I think that many people who live in cities think they have bad aspects which would then be representative of "Urban". I didn't think of this particular photo as negative although I can see how you might come to that conclusion. I hate making photos that show the dark underbelly of life and claim that it represents "art". Take a look at the "Cities" section of my web gallery and you'll see that I tend to far more positive about "urban" life. http://www.endresphotos.com/-/endresphotos/gallery.asp?cat=36258&pID=1&row=7

All the best,

Endre

A perfect capture Strad, it is good to carry a camera.

Hi Endre! I saw this image shortly after you posted it, and my first thought was...this is one of those images that one sees in Newsweek, or TIME magazine illustrating a story about the plight of the elderly poor, or something of that type. It's that quality, my friend.

Magnificent, as usual!

Hi Ende, you've got my vote. I should try your strategy in Downtown LA. I was always fearful in going around in that area in night. Courageous gets the prize. You deserve it.
