Slightly OT but you guys know everything. I am going to buy a good tripod for my 10D--the longest lense I will be using is the 70-200mm 2.8L series. Right now I am planning on the GItzo 2220 and the Arca Swiss B1--- I have a question.
I would like to put a mounting plate on my camera. Would the rig as described above come with one or do I need to purchase it seperately--If I need to purchase seperately, what would you suggest.
From what B&H carries you will need a plate even with the model that comes with the quick release, first link several models, second link model with quick release.
You will need a separate quick release plate for the lens with that setup. I have the Gitzo 2220, the Arca Swiss B1, the 70-200 2.8L lens and an EOS 3. I would suggest a plate from Really Right Stuff that is specifically designed to fit the 70-200 2.8L lens collar. They are a bit pricey, but they are terrific! It's a great setup!
I also have the 2220 with the Arca-Swiss B1. Great combo.
The B1 is the "clamp" or "grabber", but it needs an appropriate plate to grab on to. You can buy one that fits the bottom of the camera or one that fits the tripod mount on your 70-200 lens. RRS, Kirk and other companies make these plates, as well as lots of other ways to connect the different parts.
I have a RRS L bracket on my 10D - this is a winner. The B1 could support everything flipped over, but the L bracket is really a better solution.
RRS also makes a plate specifically for the 70-200 2.8 . I have this one and it works fine. I'm sure others make one too, but I can vouch for the RRS stuff and tell you that it works great.
