p.1 #1 · Ball Head / Quick Release Help

I am not new to digital photography, but i am somewhat green when it comes to using ballheads and quick release gear. Can some one tell me if a ball head comes with a quick release or are they seperate? Also can you have a quick release without a ball head? With that said i have purchased this tripod http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/483925-REG/Giottos_MT9371_MT_9371_Aluminum_Tripod_Legs.html#
Can any one recommend a decent set up for this tripod. Thanks for any help in advance.

Jim,

Some ballheads come with quick releases, some don't. The description should tell you whether it does or doesn't. Be aware that some of the budget ballheads come with proprietary quick-releases (Manfrotto, for instance), while the high-end models all use a standardized release that can be mixed and matched. This means that if you wind up going with a Manfrotto ballhead, you'll have to buy all new plates if you ever upgrade. Upgrading plates can represent a very significant expense.

The two most popular ballheads at the high end right now seem to be the Markins and Really Right Stuff models. Acratech is popular and well regarded but is perhaps generally seen to be a small step down. Kirk and Arca Swiss are also generally considered to be excellent.

For budget oriented shoppers, the Manfrotto 488RC2 seems to have been everyone's first ballhead (including mine). Its not a super-sexy answer, but is probably the best bet in a low-cost arena.

FWIW, I've just recently purchased a Markins M10 after much deliberation. Seems to be a good mix of performance, price, and features for the equipment I'll be using (maxing out at a 300 f/4 or an RB67).

The Manfrotto 468MG Magnesium Hydrostatic is a high-end ball head that offers a standard 3/8"~1/4" screw mounting platform option. I use Manfrotto RC2, RC4, 3273 slider and RRS QR plates on it.

Check out the Really Right Stuff BH series with the quick release lever. Also, Acratech makes a nice head with a good tension control. These use the arca swiss setup which I feel is better than the proprietary plates that Manfrotto and others use.
