I am from Canada... not far from the US border. I was planning on making a trip to the US in the next couple of weeks to pick up a Nikon D90. A claimed white market Nikon USA authorized dealers off ebay said that Nikon USA warranty will apply, so if I need any work done I can ship the unit from Canada to a Nikon USA location in the US and still use a Canadian return address. Can anyone confirm this?
Can any Canadians on this forum confirm the US-CDN cross border shopping rules as it applies to support and warranty as far as Nikon cameras and lenses go?
So me being in Canada will have to ship it back to Nikon USA for service and provide them with a US return address which I do not have.
I guess the question is... what are the terms and conditions of Nikon warranty on DSLRs? What is the term and what does it cover? Can current Nikon owners chime in please? D80 owners? Others?
If you purchase it in the US it will need to be sent back to the US for warranty service. You do not require a US return postal address but would be responsible for shipping cost normally absorbed by Nikon as part of the US warranty.
It's a one year manufacturers warranty that does not cover physical damage of any kind.
Why not purchase the camera in Canada and get the standard 2year Canadian warranty?

I would be spending about $1200 vs $1000 for just the body in Canada. Is the $200 insurance policy worth it? If the Canadian warranty is 2 years what are the chances that I will use it... and if I buy a US unit and have a problem within 2 years (so 1 year outside US warranty) what are the chances that it will be $200 worth of work that would need to be done on it?
Buy the US unit, save the $200 and pick up a true insurance policy for it. You can pay for much more than 2 years insurance with $200... if its a rider on your homeowners or renters insurance, it may only be a few dollars (assuming you won't be using it commercially).

What are you willing to bet that you won't need the extra warranty?
I just had to send in a D2x in mint condition for a new LCD... cost me just short of $400 bucks US. I'd take an extra years warranty for $200. I just checked Nikon's website a few minutes ago and see that they now provide an extended 2 year warranty for $249.00 for my D700 and that sounds good to me.
They also have an extended warranty up for the D90.... I didn't check to see how much for how long, but if I were you I would. These little babies are expensive to repair if you get to be one of the unlucky few. My D2x had the SMALL LCD ..... imagine what one of the nice big ones like your new camera and mine have... ouch, I bet that would hurt.
