It's extremely ambitious and I hope they pull it off.

I think it is a brilliant move. Not only is this system a professional's dream come true, the other products will be able to piggyback on the interest this will generate. The M8-2, a much more capable camera than its detractors will have us believe and a niche product without competition, a future R10, which will be a more conventional high-end DSLR utilizing incomparable lenses. I think Leica has positioned itself right in the forefront of the photographic world, a place where it belongs historically speaking..
From the press release. Sounds like a dig at Hasselblad and Fuji deciding to correct in software for their lenses like the 28mm.
" The optic calculation incorporates all
the factors and requirements of digital technology, meaning that software to correct image
artifacts becomes superfluous. "

When will it be available? Has Leica said? If its soon, why have no specifications been released? It just seems odd. It almost seems like they are announcing the development of the system. Do you have any more info about the above 's
If Nikon and or Canon are working on a similar system as some rumors suggest, the timing of the actual release from Leica will make or break this system. For instance, what happens if one of the big two, say Canon, releases something like this in February at PMA?

Well I know some people feel differently, but I wouldn't want a Canon until they learn how to make lenses, and I'm not to fond of their digital results either. They are a great 'bang for the buck' camera and robust, but I don't see them matching the Leica offering in terms of IQ.
I don't know why Canikon would bother chasing the small medium format market. They are making a killing in the 35mm DSLR segment.
I agree generally about the current Canon lenses. Nikon is a different story. Canon and actually some of the MF back makers view the 1Ds series as a serious threat to the lower end MF market. If nothing else, the next 1Ds version will have close to the MP count as the Leica S2. If its a 35mm FF, then, yes, I imagine ultimate IQ will be with the Leica. If Canon were to attempt to hang onto or even dig themselves deeper into the higher margin(which is why they would be interested) MF market, It would not be a huge undertaking for them to introduce a new format. They are already stuck even now with lenses which cannot handle their sensors. Why not introduce a larger format system since they must re-design lenses anyway and continue to eat away at the MF market. Heck, they may even believe they could own that market.
Don't tell Leica, but, of course, their revolutionary S2 idea failed when Mamiya attempted something very similar with the ZD. Leicas version is worlds better no doubt but this idea has been tried before. Leica's press release makes this introduction sound like the biggest thing since the introduction of 35mm film. That's Rich!

All this is well but I don't understand why Leica has spent all these resources for new lenses for M mount and new system but havent even bothered putting a full frame sensor in its M8.
The lens information on Leica's site states plainly that ALL S LENSES HAVE A BUILT-IN LEAF SHUTTER. That means that there isn't any need for an in-camera shutter at all. Couple that information with the size of the prism housing and I think it's pretty clear that this is very likely something like a scaled up Panasonic G1, i.e. it has an evf, and no mirror. Hence the remarkably small body. I am sure many will groan, but if the evf is sharp enough, real enough, and fast enough, and that's a big if, then I am all for it.
I suspect they think that if the S2 concept is a success, the margins will be HUGE compared to what the M8 brings them.

I thought that at first but if you click the link in this thread above for the Leica S2 info, it clearly states that this thing is an SLR with dual shutter system. Focal plane in body for fast lenses and built in leaf shutters for flash. I really don't think they have this completely sorted out yet because one place they do say all lenses will have a built in leaf shutter but in another place they state fast lenses will utilize the focal plane shutter. Then there is the issue of the body size and the required space for a huge mirror. Something just does not jive.

I'm getting the impression the translation is poor on that site. They don't have any lenses announced that couldn't have a leaf shutter (the 70mm f2.5 is the fastest they've shown and you can do an 80 f2 with a leaf shutter as Rollei has for the 6008i)
I'm suspecting that the camera uses the leaf shutter at lower speeds and a focal plane shutter at higher speeds to get both high shutter speeds and high flash sync.
I wonder if Leica will be building these Leaf shutters themselves since they don't have much of a history with leaf shutters. Perhaps whoever makes Rolleis shutters will supply them.
