If the size is really between the 5d and 1ds, shouldn't the mirror box protrude out further? The mirror should extend ~6mm further when horizontal.

ok.
so for the mathmaticians out there...
so with that sensor size of 30 x 45mm and those focal length lenses given what do these lenses equate to in 35mm focal lengths...specifically the 30mm tilt shift and the 24mm ultrawide?

Assuming the diagonal of the S sensor is 54mm (I didn't check that figure) then the 30mm T/S would be equivalent to 24mm in 35mm terms, and the 24mm S-lens would be equivalent to 20mm.
Perhaps there is no mirror box and this thing is not an SLR at all. Otherwise, how could its size be just slightly larger than a 5D? That would allow for some better designed wide angle lenses for sure. Mentioned is a Tilt and Shift 30MM lens and a 24mm. Thats pretty wide on this format. I bet these are not retrofocus designs. Live view and EVF maybe.

...than the new standard of 21 or 24MP on FX cameras. FX has a density of 2.4MP/cm3 and this Leica with MX sensor and 37MP has 2.7MP/cm3, which is pretty close, but considered the (almost) double size of the sensor... Great!

Not a mathmatician, but I think you would be looking at something like a 24 and an 18 respectively in 35mm ff speak.
Very high image quality (i.e. mf d.b.) in a portable body + lens combo is a great addition to the tools available to us but there does come a price point, especially in the current economic climate, where you want the high expense to be more flexible..i.e. usable both as dslr and on a shift camera, as almost all medium format solution currently offer.
The current all in one 35mm dslr solutions work in tandem very well with mfdb's due not only to what they can do but their lower price grouping.
Tying such expense into one system that removes the flexibility of a digital back may or may not be a winner for many.
That said, it can also be seen as a digital version of say a medium format rangefinder such as the mamiya 7 camera..not because it's a rangefinder because of course it isn't, but due to higher than 35mm format image quality in a very portable fairly simple package with exceptional glass.

That's the digital equivalent of the Pentax 67. It was very popular with fashion photographers, but that was all.
...and aerial photographers due to the faster available shutter speed. I don't think the Leica S will be an SLR. With current technology such as Live View and the much better EVF which are coming from Panasonic(who has close ties to Leica anyway), a mirror is no longer needed and the benefits of not having one are great.
