The gospel according to DPReview ?

Check the Canon websites, yes it has "environmental protection" - the same as 40D and 50D do, have you seen the 40D? It's got a few piddly little strips of rubber and foam in certain places, if it got wet going from the house to the car it'll survive, but I wouldn't trust my money, and my business, on it keeping going in sustained wet weather, and to do so when Canon openly states that it's not built for that purpose seems more than a little foolish.

Yeah, did you look at it or you didn't bother to do that. Because if you didn't there is a huge picture of showing sealed buttons and compartments. Looks like you made your mind about the camera already (not that I'm surprised). Your bad.

Yes I agree - too much marketing input, not enough giving people what they want within Canon's available technology. It certainly is not the "future of photography", it's a marketing-delayed stop-gap, if such a thing can exist.

No the 20Dn aka as 30D copped a hiding as it offered bugger all over the 20D except a bigger screen and picture styles.

Didn't it add spot metering. For my back-lit portrait shooting spot metering is just the ticket.

Yes, 30D did add spot metering too, although it's not really "spot" - the area metered is only a tiny bit less than "centre-weighted"

To compare the 5D to 5DMKII upgrade to the 20D to 30D upgrade just makes little sense in my view. Let's look at the changes:

5D to 5DMKII:

ISO: it looks like probably close to a two stop improvement
Resolution: 13 megapixels to 21 megapixels
Weather sealing: a number of new seams with some protection added (see photo above) and those who claim that the 5D MkII is like the 40D must not have seen the new info yet
View finder: 96% to 98%
Autofocus: just tweaks including perhaps some sensitivity to color and light flickering
Metering: no change
Digic Processor: Digic II to Digic iV
Frames per second: 3 to 3.9
LCD: 2.5 inch poor resolution to 3.0 inch vga resolution
Added features: Live view, movie mode, dust shaker

Now 20D to 30D:

ISO: no change
Resolution: no change
Weather sealing: no change
View finder: no change
Autofocus: very little change perhaps better algorithms
Metering: added spot meter
Digic processor: no change
Frames per second: no change
LCD: 1.8 inch to 2.5 inch but the same resolution
Added features: picture styles

Looking at the list there is no comparison. The 5DMKII is clearly a much more substantial upgrade.

I hope all the talk causes an immediate reduction in the street price since I am interesting in picking up the new 5DII as a backup to my 1Ds3.

What? No integrated MP3 player, or wireless connectivity to You Tube?!!!!!? Are you kidding? I've been screaming on these boards since introduction of the last 5D about these much needed, nay, absolutely critical features. How am I expected to shoot the highest quality, most perfectly composed images without an integrated MP3 player??!!!?? Doesn't Canon listen? Don't they realize how much I want and need this? I've had enough, I can no longer stand by a company that refuses to listen to my needs, MY needs . . . but just in case you are listening Canon, when you do get around to adding MP3 playback, don't forget that I prefer to shoot tethered . . . to some speakers.

Most of the complaints seem to boil down to: "It's not a 1-series for a non-1-series price!" If you need a 1-series, buy it. If not, buy the 5DMKII.

Get out and take some photos with the camera you've got, people.
