I agree - although looking at the titles in the books I think (despite the reasonable shutter times) I may have a bit of motion blur in that shot. Out of the frame, pawing my left shoulder was a 40 pound dog who really thought tug-or-war would be more fun than photography.

The foreground Christmas bag is really sharp on the mk2 shot: it's front-focussed.

The MTF chart doesn't look very impressive. In fact, I think the old 24/1.4L looks better than this. What gives

that is the at f/1.4 MTF only

go to the canon japan site for the old-school MTF chart at both f/1.4 and f/8

Ricala, any chance you could compare the lenses again?

* Mirror lock up
* 10s timer release or remote release if you got it
* Tripod (no wind as well)
* ISO 100 (HTP off)
* WB set according to circumstances (not AWB)
* Wide Open for the "bookshelf" shot.
* f/8.0 for landscape
* focused 1/3rd of way into frame for landscape shot
* Live View Manual Focus @ 10X on the exact same spot. Be super precise.
* 2 Sets - 1 w/ camera metering for scene, one set with a fixed exposure. This may demonstrate if the newer f/1.4 is "brighter" or not to actually affect metering.
* "Faithful" (0, 0, 0, 0) JPG or RAW

Thanks!

The lower left corner of the "bookshelf" shot (curtain detail) by the mkII looks sharp to me, that's very promising.

Not at all. You can actually take advantage of it and get creative.

Yes, but that's a double edged sword.

It's the same MFD on the old and new lens. there have been about 20 posts about it but you are still saying different And I don't see what the link has to do with this new 24mkII lens

All I'm saying is that using an aperture of f/1.4 at MFD (whichever the lens, whichever the MFD) may lead the user to many missed shots due to incredibly narrow DoF. Am I better understood now?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

diglloyd also found the 14-24 much better than the 14II.

As far as the 24LII, soon there will be a nice choice between that lens and the ZE21. If someone is primarily interested in "corners" the choice would seem to be the 21. If one is interested in wandering around at night and playing with DOF during the day it seems the 24L is the clear choice.

The version 1 has horrible bokeh most of the time, as does this lens and every other fast wide angle SLR lens ever made. No shocker there.

Yakim, my clients would only put up with a handful of shots like that. The rest would have to be sharp.

I don't know about bokeh, but on the 'land' shots the CA is certainly better on the Mark II.

edit : as far as the berries, the oof would be fine with a polarizer in a 'real' shot.

I am guessing the ZE 21 will also have better resolution compared to the 24L II and 14-24, which will make this lens a great landscape lens for the 5D II.

OK - but in the general sense, if you shoot people, IS is indeed worthless, whereas f1.4 opens up a whole new world over f2.8.

Worthless? I respectfully disagree. I have two 2.8 IS zooms and two 1.4 primes and when I shoot people I mostly opt for the zooms.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Does anyone know if the 24 II requires a front filter to complete the weather-sealing (a la the 16-35, 70-200, etc) ?
