p.2 #1 · New feature! "View previous versions"

This will be very helpful; as often people make comments which cause the poster to change the picture, making it difficult to follow the thread. Also, being able to see changes and adaptions will be very useful as part of the learning we get from other peoples' posts.

We won't be able to see previous 'pictures', only text.
The Buy and Sell board will also benefit from this. I often get complaints about posters deleting their listing prices or entire listing when their items are marked as sold. Now members will be able to track prices, etc..

I want to let everyone know that we have a new "View previous versions" feature.

You can still edit your post and remove/change its content but now once your post has been edited all members can retrieve its previous content. The new edited post format is:

"Edited on 'date' at 'time' · View previous versions"

This was implemented to decrease confusion when reading long threads. Sometimes members would radically change the content of their posts causing a disruption of the logical flow. Some examples of this are when they remove the entire content or replace it with "Deleted" or "...".
With this change,

Fred, another (nonphoto) forum I use only allows you to edit your post for a few minutes (in case of spelling etc). Would that be a better solution? That way threads don't lose their flow if people go back and edit later.

With all due respect Fred since you run the best photo forum on the net, I don't see the necessity for this additional feature. Who really cares how many times a post is edited and what it said before? It's not like anything critical depends upon it.

I think this is a great feature for the Buy/Sell forum. This will keep the original item description in case there is a disagreement and also keep the listed price for future reference. I don't know if it is something I care about in the other forums but I don't think it will be a bad thing.

Thanx Fred,
This definitely will add to the transparency and clarity of the postings.

+1
We all make mistakes, and I don't think we need to waste time seeing what those were.

"This is a very small feature. Previously when editing your post, you would still see the
"Edited by..." message. The only difference is to be able to keep the original(s) for reference. Members will only check on previous versionst if they take the extra step of clicking on the 'link'.

Usually people will only click on the link if it's pretty obvious the content was either erased or changed radically. I don't think members will waist time checking your edits for minor changes. We all make small edits from time to time.
Also, we don't allow deletion for the same reason we added this feature. On big threads, the flow gets disrupted when members delete or radically edit earlier posts...

Best,
Fred "

QUICK... FRED.... You have to edit your post....
Sorry, I couldn't resist - Since I hold the record for most misspelled words I'm always glad to see I'm not the only one!!

You got me!
Thankfully the 'View previous versions' link does not apply to the admin account!

BTW, if people here want a real spell checker, just use Firefox (and I'm sure Chrome and Opera have this feature as well...). Firefox has built in spellchecker and a million other features that make it much better than ie.

not sure how spell checker would help distinguish that waist should not be used and waste should be used. the spelling in both cases are correct.

Not a big fan of this feature at all (except on Buy/Sell). Sometimes I get in a heat about a comment and write something that a couple minutes later turns out to have been a little too harsh, so I go back and edit it. I don't like my original comment to be preserved in perpetuity if it was not what I originally meant to say.

I'm very grateful that this feature has been implemented, Fred. It's a nice benefit to see what was originally said.

Some people may be worried that their posts aren't perfect the first time they're written. So what? If you go back and edit them and someone takes the time out to look at your original posts, what's the big deal? They'll see that sure, you're human, you make mistakes like the rest of us, yet you still chose to make things right. I respect that. No need to demand perfection.

Yeah, I know what you mean Scott. Arguments can definitely make us heated up and emotional. The internet is like splashed water though: once something's been done, it's hard to make it undone.

In my experience, a little humility and the admission that I was wrong, along with an apology, tends to clear things up.

I'm not "perfect" and I accept that about myself, as well as in all others.

As Fred said - you would only bother to check if you thought a post had been edited such that further posts made no sense. Can't imagine I will ever bother - but it's there if you need it. Sometimes when a thread has got "snappy" it might be useful.

What would be nice is a "preview your post" feature as on many fora - I have no idea why but mistakes which stand out in a post are invisible when you type them in the reply box
