I'm going to be building some of my own frames and i need some glass. The only thing is i'm not sure what type of glass to get and where i could get it in bulk. Any suggestions?
If you go to an art supply house, Tru-Vue by Apogee is the popular brand. You can buy it by the case, 6 pieces of 32"x40". (Careful, a case is very, very heavy)
There are several styles including Clear, UV Coating, Non-Glare (has a matte-like tooth to it), Anti-Reflective (has a coating and any glare has a purplish tinge just like a camera lens.)
A-R is very pricey. Non-Glare mushes out the image too munch IMO. For general stuff, I use the clear. UV if I have a bigger budget.
You can buy Tru-Vue by the case in all the popular sizes. Glass comes 50sf to the case no matter what the pre-cut size is. 8x10-11x14-16x20-20x24-32x40 etc. As an example and if you make correct cuts one lite of 32x40 cuts down to 4x 16x20; one lite of 16x20 cuts down to 4x 8x10....you get the picture.
We are custom picture framers and use Tru-Vue exclusively; standard, UV inhibiting, glare resistant etc. One thing to consider when using glare resistant.....the further your print is from the glass the more out of focus looking it will become. We regularly single or even double mat under glare resistant glass but triple matting keeps the print too far away so double mat is the limit.
