I've been coming here for about a year now looking at photos upon photos, seeing what would help with my composition, post production, etc etc. This will be my very first upload/post and looking forward to meeting users with a similar interest as myself.

C&C is very welcome
be gentle

I am by no means qualified to give an expert opinion, but as you asked...

Comp is good
Whites are over exposed/blown
Border blends into shirt - some distinction may help?

hope this helps

thanks for the critique. unfortunately his shirt is brand new and bright white. and the the black and white filter I used does blow this shirt out but also gives me the best detail in the face. It was a toss up that plagued me for a couple days. Maybe a black border?

Thanks for the advice.

You can solve the white and black with photoshop - process the picture twice (raw to tiff) with exposure low and exposure high, then open both, then select the drag, then shift/drag the best one on the worst one and play with opacity on the best one. Alternatively you can paint the areas on but thats a longer description which I am not yet good at.
