There are so many people saying about the 40D upgrade. Canon has said clearly that this is not an upgrade, the 40D model is still in the line up. The 50D is a brand new model.

Rumours have been going around about the 5D splitting in 2 models. Perhaps this is the basic model?

The features are pretty good. Everyone also is saying about competition to Nikon. Personally, I think Canon has a much better image out of the camera than Nikon does. If you can hit focus then who really cares whether it has 51 points or 9. When I was shooting nothing but film I used the RB67 and all I had mas manual metering, manual focus and I did not care. I was the photographer and it was my job to get it right.

Just like the XTi was "still in the lineup" for a while after the XSi came out. It's marketing, nothing more.

The XTi is still in the lineup as well as the XT.

Brit,

It's all relative. Canon doesn't want you to consider it an upgrade cause they still have inventory of 40Ds.

I consider it an upgrade from a 40D, not a huge one, but an upgrade none-the-less.

For me, going from 10mp to 15mp is... an upgrade.

Cheers

Getting back to the AF for a moment:

I personally have gotten really frustrated with the _size_ of the 9 point AF sensors more than the number. I believe part of the reason the 1 series is more accurate/reliable in practice is because they don't extend off of a normally sized (in the VF) target. It also doesn't help 9pt AF that there are big gaps between sensors in AI servo. These 2 factors combined are one reason I bought my 1dm2 for sports/birding.

BUT, the advantage the 50D does have for still/slow subjects in poor light is that the peripheral sensors are cross type. That makes off center framing much easier and more accurate with large apertures - which is ideal for weddings.

As for Nikon, the d300 and d700 may have pro AF, but all the cross sensors are in the MIDDLE of the frame, so what's the point? I was really disappointed when the specs of the 50D came out, but maybe it isn't so bad (and not worth switching) after all.

The AF points are cross type and if you check out the specs they are different is size to the 40D. Until the body becomes available then we will not know for sure. We will then have all the threads starting again.

Well I guess you have about 2 months to kick this one around untill someone gets one and tells it like it is. All the wishing at this point isn't going to change the 50D specs.

I think it is a respectable offering and if your not satisfied with it specs there are plenty of other cameras and manufacturers to choose from.

Chances are, 1D replacements will be out next year. With the failure that they were(1D MkIII that is), their prosumer cameras such as 40D and 50D are much superior in terms of quality. There were quite a number of photographers who downgraded from 1D III series back to 40Ds and 5Ds.
Lets not bash the camera before it's out and reviews are posted. Features are really nice. Just ISO on its own can be enough for some to upgrade

Couldn't agree more JIm. Many were not happy with Canon's LCD's, high iso as compared to Nikon's D3. So far specs seems to indicate LCD is equal or better the D3's and High iso is as good as D3's. So there is nothing for us to be unhappy about.

So far I think the 50D is a great leap forward for us all. Great to have competition

I'm ordering one! The stated High ISO capabilities are enough for me to give it a go when it's available. Will there be a new 5d released? The 5d mark II will sit at a level that will be quite close to the 50d in terms of functionality- and may cause some difficulty for many buyers. I realize that Canon is not going to give up full frame, but the line up just keeps getting more and more crowded, and it might not be in the best interest of business to release a 5d mark II, unless it were dramatically different. (Okay, full frame is dramatically different but for many people that are buying a 50d, or moving up from a non full frame body, it might not be a huge deal).

Anyhow, for the 50d, I think the upgrades may appear subtle for many people out there because some functions just don't seem very important for everybody. I think most of the upgrades are right where I wanted the 40d to be upgraded- better high ISO, better AF points (not that it was shabby), better LCD... When the 40d came out, one of the things I was most excited about was the ISO value being displayed in the viewfinder.

The 40d was already a very, very good camera for the price (especially during the rebates!), and the added functionality will make it the perfect complement to my kit, and I look forward to testing it out and reporting back with samples.

If you think that only a year ago the 30D was the current camera, in a little more than 12 months the specs have move tremendously:

8MP -> 15MP (plus sRaw1 and sRaw2)
12 bits -> 14 bits
ISO 3200 -> ISO 12800
2,5in 230kpixel -> 3,0in 920kpixel
viewfinder magnification 0.9x -> 0.95x
5 fps -> 6.3 fps
30 jpeg buffer -> 90 jpeg buffer
No live view -> live view
NO dust removal -> dust removal
ISO in the viewfinder when changing -> always ISO in the viewfinder
NO auto ISO -> auto ISO 100-1600
NO autofocus adjustment -> autofocus adjustment
AF with only center cross type sensor -> all cross type sensors + enhanced center sensor
No weather sealing -> partial weather sealing

Plus many other little things improved (AF-ON, menu system, auto lightning, HDMI, custom functions, histogram, higher power batteries, optional grips, etc.)

Thanks Canon

Someone on a tech forum I frequent posted this link. They seem ecstatic about the AF.

From the article..."As in all cases, the motive still is my assessment that the EOS 50D has probably the world's fastest auto focus."

The thing with Canon is that they actually have all the camera features most desire... like full frame, high MP etc... but all at an unreachable (to most) price.... in the form of the 1D series cameras. But I don't want a giant camera!!

What they have been loathe to do is to include the real goodies from the 1D series into a smaller body format for fear of cannibalising sales... of the more expensive cameras.

It's now or never though... I eagerly await the next FF camera in the compact body format of the 5D etc...

I don't care what they call it 5DII, 7D, 3D, 2D whatever... but give me the real stuff... give me FF, weathersealing and 100% VF in a compact body and I'm there...

It's easy to understand your pain buddy... I gave up at the 20D stage... and won't buy again till they give me the camera I need/want...

Just keep snapping away with your 40D and be happy... you could always draw a 50D over the badge to help?

In the article the guy seems to really think the AF is fast... he says:

"Förbluffande quickly, I must add. "

Now I don't know what the Förbluffande means... but it sounds about the same as what we'd say in English...

He also says that he received money for being a guinea pig... and paid reviewers ..... are biased reviewers...

"Note: I received a compensation for being part of the produktfilmerna."
