I was wondering if anyone has suggestion for a good neck strap for a medium to large SLR/DSLR. I don't like the ones that come with the cameras. Many thanks in advance.
Other than tiny P&S for whick a wrist trap is great, I have found that neck trap is just a nuisance. My D3 and D300 are not tied to any trap.
Just my way!
I have a Domke Gripper but unless I need two hands for multiple lens changing it never goes around my neck as its way to heavy (1d2 w/Ls). Always on the right shoulder
I got a shoulder belt pad/sleeve from the automotive dept. at wallyworld. Only a few bucks, several types to choose from, and I can wear any neck strap all day without any problem.
+1. I spent all day yesterday with my Canon 20D and a rented 70-200 f/2.8 around my neck on that strap, and I didn't even feel it at the end of the day.
I used to use the traditional OpTech strap, but found it to be too hot around the neck and it when worn around the shoulder the load would slip off my shoulder.
So... I switch to the LowePro Speedster, and have been quite happy with it. It has some good sewn in rubber strips that grip better to the shoulder and I've never noticed the strap when I'm on a shoot.
You just gotta try them out. One thing I have become addicted to is QR straps...only that kind now. My two favs, but very different, are Upstrap and the Canon Pro Strap. Used the latter for years and still like it. But now have the Upstrap. The main reason is that the Upstrap STICKS the strap to your shoulder, which I how I use a camera strap...not around the neck. The Canon Pro is good because while it is sticky, it is not so sticky you can't whip it off fast.
I use an Optech strap, it's certainly an upgrade to the standard strap you get from Canon. I went shooting with a friend awhile ago and he uses a Lowepro strap (I don't know which model), but I thought it was extremely comfortable, even more than my Optech. But basically any neoprene strap will be an upgrade, and amazingly it does make the camera seem much lighter!
Yeah, another vote for the Optech Pro Loop. I have been using them for years and they are great. Even in really hot and sweaty conditions the strap never rubs or chaffs.

...my camera usually has no strap attached.
Yeah, I can understand this. In my case tho, I need to have straps, espeically when treking to the pitch and having two cameras. That is why the QR models are so addicting. You still have the little pieces hanging off the camera, but at least the strap can be mostly removed and put out of the way...then reattached later.
