p.1 #1 · Are released needed for "National Geographic"-type images?

I'm going to be doing some traveling later this year and was wondering if model releases would be required for "National Geographic" type portraits. I know the chances of getting published somewhere are small, but I want to have all bases covered just in case. I may also sell limited edition prints of some images if they turn out well enough.

So, does anyone know the legalities involved? I'm unsure about how willing people would be to sign a release, especially given the cultural barriers, but I don't want to do this the wrong way either.

Thanks, in advance.

If you use them in exactly the way National Geographic does, you don't need a release.

Journalistic/editorial use? No. Potential commercial use otherwise? Yes. Some magazines might want a release for even editorial use just to cover their bases...I've heard that Conde Nast Traveler, for instance, likes to have releases so that they're less limited in their use of images they've commissioned.
