You shoot hand held. Gotta to be a weight lifter. How much weight is that?

I don't know for sure how much it weighs between the camera and the lens but at the end of they day it feels like a large boat anchor

I stated a memorial service for the Shutter not the camera

They do not rebuild the shutters Ken. They have a life expectancy of so many shutter actuation's and when they fail they are disposed of and replaced with a new shutter mechanism.

I still stand by my statement We should have a memorial service for your shutter. It served you proudly and helped produce some amazing images

Ant

Oh! I stand corrected and beg your forgiveness, compassionate one

Oh, I can feel your pain.. What, to be with such a great lens, and a dead camera. Oh, I can't believe it. Hopefully you will get the camera fixed in a hurry... you do have another camera don't you

Bad day, but nice images, Ken. I know the feeling - the shutter mechanism on my old 20D died and Canon had to replace it. Soon you'll have your baby back and all will be well

Thank you Maggie. I also sent in the 400 5.6 for calibration so hopefully I will have a kit so sharp I will cut myself every time I use it

Did anyone else immediately think of "American Pie" upon reading the thread title? Now it's stuck in my head...

Excellent work here! My favorite of the series is probably #8. Something about the color really sticks out.

Ken,

so sorry about your camera. What bad luck. Luckily you had the backup. Perfect example for why you should always have two camera bodies if possible. Bad luck for sure. You name your camera Hummmmm, I was told to name my old truck - - we did "Jurassic Park" Jurassic cause it was so old, Park because it was impossible to park unless I had two or three spaces next to each other.

Speedy recovery for "Betsy"

My cameras are referred to by their model names & the new truck is referred to as the "Tundra" - - guess why.....

Lil,

When I have the 500 mounted on her I call the combination the "Betsy and the Beast"

Actually, most of these were taken out at Bolsa Chica and a couple from a park nearby.

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Ken,
Some great first shots here with the 500. Congrats. #8 of the duck coming into land is a beautiful shot with great light, color, action and detail. Really like this one.
The quality of the shots from the 500 must have been too much for Betsy's shutter. Lets hope she is back in action soon.
Martin

Thanks Martin. I can't wait for the real beginning of Duck Season to start this fall. I am going to be hunting for more

"Steve Wolfe"? I RESEMBLE that name... Yeah, it was quite a sight, you doing CPR on Betsy...Super images all Ken, and even the Marbled Godwit in-flight would have been a good 'un. Actually, you almost could have cropped the black part out...

Waiting for the Resurrection of Betsy,
Steve

Ahh sorry to hear about your camera. Glad you had a backup and hopefully your camera will be good as new once you get it back. Lovely shots! They are all wonderful, but #'s 1 & 3 are my faves.
Jenna

Hi Jenna,

Fortunately the shutter failed late in the day and I didn't have to rely on the XTi too much to enjoy the day. I am sure she will be alright when the doctors get through with here. Just wish I had included her in my group health insurance. You never know when illness will strike

Deepest sympathies, Ken. I'm sure Betsy will be just fine after the transplant, and I sincerely hope your bank account wont be in critical condition when you get the doctor's bill!
Frank

Hey Frank,

My bank account is going to need a transplant too. Would you consider making a donation?

Glad you enjoyed the pics and thanks for joining in on the fun!

Ken, you have my sincerest condolences regarding Betsy and her need for a transplant. No doubt the camera doctors will have her back to you in even better shape then she left in. I must say, however, that Betsy managed to pull off some stunning photos before her unfortunate shutter failure. Hope you have her back soon as I am sure that she misses you!

Dave I.

Thank you David. I got word that Betsy is in critical condition but they expect a full recovery once the transplant operation has been performed. We were fortunate that we got her to the doctors in time

Sorry to hear about Betsy, Ken. She sure did give some great shots before the failure though. Don't woory, It isn't a big deal I already had two shutters replaced in my cameras, the last one two weeks ago. She will be in my prayers.
Socrate

Hi Socrate,

I figure with the sheer numbers of shots I have taken with this camera in the past year a shutter failure was imminent. Would have preferred it later rather than sooner but better it happened close to home rather than on one of my fly-out trips.
