Wow man the results of the 500L are so sweet and sharp, just love em, even with the standby XTi it is so good. Hope the "big sister" will have a full recovery.

You shoot hand held. Gotta to be a weight lifter. How much weight is that?

The camera is in for repair as we speak (virtualy speaking of course) and no memorial will be necessary. We expect a full recovery

I stated a memorial service for the Shutter not the camera

They do not rebuild the shutters Ken. They have a life expectancy of so many shutter actuation's and when they fail they are disposed of and replaced with a new shutter mechanism.

I still stand by my statement We should have a memorial service for your shutter. It served you proudly and helped produce some amazing images

Bad day, but nice images, Ken. I know the feeling - the shutter mechanism on my old 20D died and Canon had to replace it. Soon you'll have your baby back and all will be well

Ken,

so sorry about your camera. What bad luck. Luckily you had the backup. Perfect example for why you should always have two camera bodies if possible. Bad luck for sure. You name your camera Hummmmm, I was told to name my old truck - - we did "Jurassic Park" Jurassic cause it was so old, Park because it was impossible to park unless I had two or three spaces next to each other.

Speedy recovery for "Betsy"

My cameras are referred to by their model names & the new truck is referred to as the "Tundra" - - guess why.....

Great shots - - these must be from SJWS

Ken,
Some great first shots here with the 500. Congrats. #8 of the duck coming into land is a beautiful shot with great light, color, action and detail. Really like this one.
The quality of the shots from the 500 must have been too much for Betsy's shutter. Lets hope she is back in action soon.

Ahh sorry to hear about your camera. Glad you had a backup and hopefully your camera will be good as new once you get it back. Lovely shots! They are all wonderful, but #'s 1 & 3 are my faves.

Deepest sympathies, Ken. I'm sure Betsy will be just fine after the transplant, and I sincerely hope your bank account wont be in critical condition when you get the doctor's bill!

I've got names for my cameras, too, but nothing I could disclose in polite company...

Oh, nearly forgot, fantastic photo's, by the way!! Doesn't look like you had any warning at all that Betsy was ailing.

Ken, you have my sincerest condolences regarding Betsy and her need for a transplant. No doubt the camera doctors will have her back to you in even better shape then she left in. I must say, however, that Betsy managed to pull off some stunning photos before her unfortunate shutter failure. Hope you have her back soon as I am sure that she misses you!

Man that really sucks Ken... one step forward, two steps back... sounds like my luck

The shots that you did get are terrific... the mallard coming in for a landing is just beautiful...

Hope Canon doesn't beat you up too bad....

Sorry to hear about Betsy, Ken. She sure did give some great shots before the failure though. Don't woory, It isn't a big deal I already had two shutters replaced in my cameras, the last one two weeks ago. She will be in my prayers.

Well Ken I guess its still cheaper than getting a new camera and I think these digital cameras take a lot more beating on the shutter than the old film taking days as I find I take many more photos than are needed at a visit planed for a reason just because I'm there and it cost nothing while I would think one roll would do it with film many years ago. So I guess we take our lumps for digital.
Lou

Hey Lou,

I admit I have been a bit reckless in my shutter usage at the cost of taking too many shots to look through at the end of the day and taking up way too much storage space on my HD. I am going to try to restrain myself a little and only take 1000 shots per trip instead of the usual 2000

Same thing happened to my brothers, he had a very similar last photo too Don't worry it was only $180 bucks to fix it, that was about 2yrs or so ago.

Nice series, Ken

PS. I just read the amount you said it was to fix HOLY COW that seems high.

Chad, it doesn't seem high. IT IS HIGH! I tried to negotiate a lower price but the gal behind the desk just wasn't buyimg my flattery

Thank you Mohammed. I am going out shooting with the 500 + XTi this weekend just to get a feel for that combination. I don't hold out high hopes for birds in flight but for static subjects it should produce acceptable results.
