@ phil: I have no idea how close, Phil. It was damned close (mm's), though, and I was clearly "bugging" him...he kept flying at me and I persisted as he went from landing to landing. Funny thing is that with the lens out at 5x magnification (fully extended) you're actually further away from the subject than at 1x mag!!
