yes, but not on a superior 1 series, that's why it's a 1 series, it's fast is faster than your fast.
it's due to a special patent canon has on spacetime, ask pixel perfect for the details.
Imagemaster, he cant give details. Its a spacetime thing, if he tells too many people he risks causing continuum problems that enable people to alter the future and the past.
It happens a lot in Australia, we are currently fighting a never ending war with robots from future England who are trying to turn our vegemite into marmite.
According to canon, 40d AF is 30% better than 30d. I have no experince with 40d but 30d is crap (if I can use the word) in AI servo mode when compared to my 1dmk2. This is using canon superteles.
It is up to you, Scooter. I HATED the 1.6 sensor from day one - I went from a 10d (about the size and weight of a 5d) to the 1dm2n and the 1.3 sensor and am so happy I get some of my wide angle back. I would have gone for a 1dsm2, but I got to where I needed a bigger screen to see the damn thing.
I've got large hands - and could never get comfortable shooting an XTi. So the size of the 1dm2n is not a concern for me. The added weight helps seady me - again, the XTi was too light and too small for me to steady.
The real reason for the change was the better AF system on the 1-series - infinately better than the old 10d. The XTi ended up with the 30d focusing system, and that just did not cut it, either. I know the 40d has additional cross-point af sensors, and other improvements...
I could never go back to a 1.6 sensor - maybe not even the 5d - two reasons - The AF as already stated, and why in Gods green earth these camera makers insist on sub-100% viewfinders on non-pro cameras (including the 5d) is beyond me. I think I'm capable of framing the shot and not cutting off someone's head - 96% coverage just does not cut it. With a 96% finder, automatically, I'm losing 4% of the pixels I paid for - if it ain't in the viewfinder, I don't want it... and that's before I crop it to fit.
All that said, the 40d is the camera for some, and not for others. It ain't for me.
I sold my IIN and kept the 40D for now (I had thoughts of getting a MK III at the beginning of next year but after RG's comments, I don't know that I will - I may go the 5D replacement route). My reasons were smaller/lighter body for travel and I am not a pro so I didn't "need" the big step up that the IIN offered. However, if the 40D hadn't been a BIG step up from the 20D, I would never have gotten rid of my IIN.
The 40D is more than capable for youth sports and BIF - beyond that I don't know. The AF and tracking works great for me - MUCH better than 20D but of course not IIN quality.
I may not know what I am talking about tho because if I understood RG's comments, he doesn't think the 40D AF is anything to be happy with. I have been more than happy with mine using a 300 2.8IS and 400 5.6....whatever that is worth.
I sold my 40D to purchase a Mark II N. Absolutely the best thing I've ever done. The Mark II N makes me money. The AF is faster, the FPS is higher, It is by far the superior camera. It has some quirks with the 2 finger buttons, but the shots, in my opinion are much better than the 40D.
I wouldn’t call anyone crazy for making a gear choice to suit their preference. The 40D is a stellar camera and the autofocus is superior to that of the previous xxD models (which doesn’t make it the equal of the 1D series, but it’s still good). It’s small without being so small it feels like a toy, light, and the batteries and charger are easy to pack. Live view’s a great feature for landscape photography. Having the three custom settings on the dial can be a real time saver, and the xxD series finally got replaceable focus screens with this model. There is a lot to love about the 40D, and you shouldn’t be made to question your sanity for considering it over the mIIn. If it’s a better fit, then do it. If the mIIn has something the 40D doesn't that you'll regret losing, then don't.
I will tell you of my experience. I bought a 5D because using a 1D mkII as a walk around was stretching my arm to a couple inches longer than the other. I really like the 5D, but I really liked the feel of my 1D mk II.
The answer? For sports, I bought a used 1d mkI for $650, so I have it for it's weather, speed and build. I didn't need the large file sizes for the sports photos, so I think I have the best of all worlds. I think you would feel the same with the 40D and the 1D mkI.
