By the time I get one of these adapters, either I have given up the 14-24 completely or I have bought a D700.........

No I haven't, but I'll send him an email today. I was hoping to get one a little faster by advertising a WTB on FM

Its a great lens though, if you like manual everything. No filters though.

Actually,
it appears that LEE filters can be used with the 14-24G.
Haven't used them yet myself, but plan to.

I am thinking of removing some of the shade material and mounting the Lee adapter to the remainder. It does vigness a substantial amount due to the filter holders. Flare could be an issue...

Andrew, is that your actual experience?
Have you personally tried the setup that John at LEE suggested?

I have the slip on lee adapter, and I shimmed it for a snug fit. The problem is that the filter holders vignette in the image. I am not even sure that the filter is wide enough - looking for some blue tack to see. I'll let you know.
