Looking to assist a professional photographer in the NY area and would like some advice about how to establish such a relationship. I have Canon gear and can work as a second shooter. I am also good with computers and at re-touching photos in Photoshop. I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for this type of inquiry.
People that send me emails or letters with resumes usually get ignored by me. The email just gets archived, and the letter sits in a folder on the desk. If they want to get my interest, they need to follow up on those emails/letters to see if I received them and thought about the position. Then I start thinking about it
I too believe in the knocking on doors approach and have had limited success with it, but I find most photographers are not receptive. I am not a kid anymore - just turned 50 -and I am not your typical would be assistant. I am looking for a more efficient way to make contacts and was hoping it might be possible through one of the forums on this site. Ideally I would like to ease into photography part time, working different jobs/events as my schedule (and the available opportunities), allow. I am not looking for compensation and am willing to work in exchange for experience. I am responsible, present well and bring a variety of skills to the table.

This is probably your best bet, so you can network while you build your skills. With regard to my own business, I don't take on second shooters unless they're capable of producing professional quality results.
