I bought it off of fleebay and did the conversion.

So far I love the lens, sorry im using it on a 20d and not a 5d(saving for one).

Some samples from yesterday all shot at 1.2 except the lotus flower

Regards
John

Thanks Cogitech, good club to be in. Thanks for posting the conversion process, I doubt I would have tackled any of this without your threads with great images and conversion technique. I still need to sand the shim down more (can't reach infinity yet), and I was too chicken to do the filing for use on a 5d (hoping the new 5d has better luck with manual lenses and mirror conflicts)

Regards
John

Awesome John, I think we all feel the same way!

I have found that the intangible benefit of my wife not having AF functions with the lens is yet another great reason to have it! Keeps her on her A580, and not monkeying around with the 5d!

That's funny, my wife sticks to my EOS1 film camera. But I have to constantly grab my 20d away from my 5 year and 8 year old daughter

Heres a shot of me and my 5 year old taken by my 8 year old.

I really liked this shot too. I don't think there are more than three or four pictures of me and my children. Kind of sad. I am always behind the camera shooting at them.

I am using the hoada fu slit prism focussing screen.

I also use an ebay adapter that confirms focus. I do not think there is a perfect solution. The focussing screen is good for the middle of the shot, the adapter covers the focussing points ( but I do not think perfectly in focus.)

If you are using a camera that will take a high-precision matte screen (like the Ee-S for the 5D) then I have to recommend trying it. A whole new experience of manual focusing awaits, IMO.

Cogitech, canon does not support a focussing screen for the 20d. Some day I will order a 5d or replacement. And I will get the style of screen that you speak of.

Yep, I have a 3rd-party, split-screen w/microprism collar in my 20D as well. Despite the fact that it is calibrated (shimmed) perfectly, it is really not very nice to use. I got by with it when it was all I had, but the 5D with Ee-S is ... well there's no point in rubbing it in.

OK, I also jumped on this bandwagon. I could not sleep last night, and got up at about midnight, searched chicagos craigslist and found one listed at around 10:30. I sent an email and asked the guy to call me if he was still up. He was and I took a 2 hour drive to the city, inspected my goods, and laid out the cash. All this while the wife slept. I am off work right now, and spent the day cleaning it and doing the conversion. The lens is now spotless inside, and with a contax 55 to 86 ring and #4 hood on it. If I am able will post my first picture with it. ISO 100 F/1.2 at its closest focusing distance. By the way..I do not have a shaved mirror, nor did I file the rear element holder. I have not done any test other than set it at Infinty and snap the shutter and I have not problems....weather focus is spot on may be another story. I will say this though, if your are going to file the rear element, remove it from the rest of the lense, all you need to do is pad a pair of channel locks and give it a twist. This will also alow you to clean the rest of the lense.

Well, I still need to thin my shim some, I am not getting to infinity. Sorry for any false hope for the FF crowd.

I do have a question though, I removed the front element and now have access to the helicoids, where there is dryed grease/oil, while I have it open I would like to clean up as much of this as I can, and regrease/oil. What type of solvent would be good for the cleaning and what type of oil/grease and how much should be put in. Where would I purchace the solvent and oil/grease?

Nice read. And nice images. I have not removed mine since the conversion. Screw infinity. Just kidding, I will sand some more.

No advice for the cleaning process. You may start another thread, unless cogitech chimes in.

Another picture, with good focus.
