I tried to buy the camera in January. But the shops didn't have recieved any blue dot bodies yet. So I had to wait a few weeks until they got them. And many shops are still selling the blue dot cameras. (they are good so I don't know why people here are scared) Only a few months ago, nobody here like to buy the camera if it didn'y have a blue dot. Suddenly it's the opposite and people don't buy them if they have the blue dot
The other colors on the dot are very new. And i haven't even seen one of those in real life. Only reading about them here....Show more →
Lars we are in US and where are you? Sweden or some Asian country as I remember? Could be different because of this, I mean slower supply....

Sweden are slow. But I buy my stuff in Bangkok. They get it at least as fast as you. And then I talk about seing the camera and lenses on the shelf in the shops. It's made in Asia
I got a new blue dot at the end of October last year though I don't think they started appearing in stores till November.
There is nothing wrong with a blue dot at all, I am very very pleased with mine and it has over 60K frames on it now, so just about run in. I guess all I am saying is that given the somewhat chequered history of this camera body, I would ask myself the question of why is a store still selling a blue dot in the US when everyone else appears to be getting polka dots! I guess I am just over cautious.

OK, I guess I will postpone returning this body. I was initially scared of manufacturer date I found on body (inside buttery section). Camera itself working great, I tested all my lenses with it. Amazing body!

Could you link me to these bulletins and links please, thanks.

P.S. And I do not mean the "flim flam" rubbish, I am requesting hard facts.
Colin! It's very easy! No flim flam rubbish. Just go to www.canon.com
There is a Product Advisory on the lower right side of every single webpage where Canon displays the Mark III... from "Overview" to "Features" to "Specifications" to "What's in the Box" to "Supplies and Accessories" to "Support and Service" to "Drivers and Downloads" every single Mark III product page... the Product Advisory is there.
If you don't have pop-up blocking, Canon even had a Pop Up window at one time (not sure if they still do, and I don't feel like disabling my pop up blocker) to let any and every viewer know about the status of Mark IIIs, and the new mirror box hardware assembly.
Click on the Product Advisory link from any Canon webpage related to the Mark III, and Canon's full explanation is there, including another link to an Excel Spreadsheet file that details each and every serial number under the manufacturing change break point that Canon believes is unaffected, versus affected
When seeking "hard facts" about a product, one reasonable resource is the company that makes the product. Canon is kind of a large company. Probably not flim. But they did make stuff that used film. Still might. Best ask them.
Don't worry, I'll take you directly there.... Ready?
The blue dot is a POSITIVE indicator that the camera was built with the UPDATED hardware. Not recalled from a dealer and upfitted, but BUILT in JAPAN on the production line with the update. Blue dot = GOOD.
Since when did Blue dot became a negative all of the sudden? Is internet rumour mongering gone out of control?
Not only that, but your serial number is 55xxxx. Another POSITIVE indicator.
The serial numbers with the old hardware problem are below Serial # 546xxx. (see exact breakpoint on Canon's website).
And so what, you've got firmware 1.1.3. Yes, there is new firmware out now, it was just released a couple months ago. Simply download it from Canon, put it on a card, and upload it into your camera. Save time, save gasoline, save shipping. It all costs money to YOU to make a needless return.
Next month, or next year, Canon may release another firmware update for the MkIII, just like Canon has done for numerous other past SLRs. What will you do then? Sell the body at a loss, and buy an new body (assuming it is the same body) just to get the firmware update? Of course not. You'll download the new firmware just as easily.
There is no known or reported difference between the firmware that Canon installs, and the firmware that Canon releases for us to install. Same stuff.
There is no known or reported hardware difference between a 55xxxx and a 57xxxx MkIII. Same hardware. Different firmware, but you can easily change that.
Even camera was good, I went to store yesterday morning and replaced with OW03XX (2008, March) made and 56XXXXX SN. Very happy I did that since now I am free of nightmares with dot's and err99 ... !!!!
Also box doesn't have any dots'. Camera having 1.2.3 firmware preinstalled as well. Thanks everyone (and BH)!!!!

From my own personal, and very bad experience with three bodies, Blue Dot, N 57XXXX does not = good (as someone put it). I wouldn't touch a 1DMkIII that was made before February. When you are spending $4K + you shouldn't have to ask yourself "are you feeling lucky".

Do you think it is normal getting blue dot 1DIII brand new from reputable store in July 2008 with 1.1.3 installed?
Yes. I know it's "normal" .

Sounds very strange to me since blue dot's stopped long ago. Would you return it?
I'd install firmware 1.23 and then go learn how to use it to the high level which it's capable.
