Do you think it is normal getting blue dot 1DIII brand new from reputable store in July 2008 with 1.1.3 installed? Sounds very strange to me since blue dot's stopped long ago. Would you return it?

I don't want to announce huge/famous store name since they promise to exchange tomorrow but what are they thinking about? How could they do this to the customers?

Code 12/2007, SN 55*****

I just got mine from Canoga Camera last Monday. SN 57xxxx. Seems yours has been on the shelf for a while.

6 month sitting is stock with old firmware and suddenly sent to the customer? Code 12/2007. Don't you think something wrong?

If the code is 12/07. Then the camera has not been sitting on the shelf for 6 months. It was probably still in Japan 6 months ago. It was made in the factory about six months before you order it. You can't really expect a store to send back every camera and lens that they don't sell within the first 2-3 months.
I have been buying about 40 Canon cameras & lenses. most of them have a date code that are 3-8 months old when I buy them.
As long as they work good

I would agree with you if that would be different than 1DMKIII camera with history of err99 and other issues. It is very risky to get camera like this.

Normal, I don't think so. I know quite a few photographers who have finalled moved to the Mark 3, as in the Canon 1D3, not the N(*&on D3, and over the last 6 months none of them received a blue dot.

Given the history, even my history, with various AF screwed up 1D3s I would be a little nervous, though saying that at the end of last year I received a new replacement blue dot 1D3 and have been happy ever since.

I would say, either the dealer has been hanging onto this body for a while or more likely it has been released from Japan since I know they hung onto alot of bodies at the end of last year. If I was you, right now, with my own money, if someone handed me a blue dot, I would ask for an exchange.

What is wrong with blue dots?

The blue dot is a POSITIVE indicator that the camera was built with the UPDATED hardware. Not recalled from a dealer and upfitted, but BUILT in JAPAN on the production line with the update. Blue dot = GOOD.

Since when did Blue dot became a negative all of the sudden? Is internet rumour mongering gone out of control?

Not only that, but your serial number is 55xxxx. Another POSITIVE indicator.

The serial numbers with the old hardware problem are below Serial # 546xxx. (see exact breakpoint on Canon's website).

And so what, you've got firmware 1.1.3. Yes, there is new firmware out now, it was just released a couple months ago. Simply download it from Canon, put it on a card, and upload it into your camera. Save time, save gasoline, save shipping. It all costs money to YOU to make a needless return.

Next month, or next year, Canon may release another firmware update for the MkIII, just like Canon has done for numerous other past SLRs. What will you do then? Sell the body at a loss, and buy an new body (assuming it is the same body) just to get the firmware update? Of course not. You'll download the new firmware just as easily.

There is no known or reported difference between the firmware that Canon installs, and the firmware that Canon releases for us to install. Same stuff.

There is no known or reported hardware difference between a 55xxxx and a 57xxxx MkIII. Same hardware. Different firmware, but you can easily change that.

There is no KNOWN hardware difference between my #503xxx and the last camera to leave the production line (and mine works perfectly and has never had the so-called sub-mirror assembly "fix").

Thanks for explanation, what about err99. As I remember reading about 1DIII it was more of them with earlier numbers?

That was funny, Colin!

But all kidding aside, there is a known hardware difference between cameras above and below a certain serial number Canon has posted online. We know it from Canon, because Canon has issued bulletins and links disclosing the hardware difference.

As to whether or not you've experienced a performance difference (as opposed to internal hardware) between your 503xxx camera and the most recent camera to leave the current production line, well, wouldn't you had to have tried both to know of a difference or not?.

It's great to hear that you've had no troubles with your early Mk III., btw.

Sorry, will try to be more precise next time! This is a forum after all!

Over the past [indeterminate] few months, people I know have been receiving various dots on their 1D3 boxes, all of them coloured, but none of them blue.

Well, my 1Ds3, received first week after its release, sure enough died with Err99 in March, which sucked. Similar was reported from others, and 1D3 (non-S) owners...

Could you link me to these bulletins and links please, thanks.

P.S. And I do not mean the "flim flam" rubbish, I am requesting hard facts.

I tried to buy the camera in January. But the shops didn't have recieved any blue dot bodies yet. So I had to wait a few weeks until they got them. And many shops are still selling the blue dot cameras. (they are good so I don't know why people here are scared) Only a few months ago, nobody here like to buy the camera if it didn'y have a blue dot. Suddenly it's the opposite and people don't buy them if they have the blue dot
The other colors on the dot are very new. And i haven't even seen one of those in real life. Only reading about them here.
