i have been traveling with the lowenpro 250 backpack (computer and camera gear) and a carry on suitcase on United - both within the US and overseas. The ystill consider the backpack a 'personal item'. It does fit under a seat (well, mostly)
good to know... Well I leave in 6 hours. I will let you know if it got on or had to check it. I really dont want to check $20,000 in gear. Something just scares me about checking it.
I'm flying on an NWA regional jet to Memphis for a wedding this weekend, and I got a Pelican 1510 for my gear. I have a feeling they are going to make me gate check, so I want my stuff protected.
I have never had a problem with my backpacks, as they almost always fit under my seat. This was only in larger planes though.
I have found that it is good to be one of the first to board after they let 1st class on. As long as your gear will fit in the overhead you should be OK. It is when you get on last and all the overheads are taken is when they may make you check your bag. There was one time when I could get my Think Tank International in the overhead and for some reason the space under the seat was tight, put the bag on the floor between my legs and put my jacket over my lap and they never said anything. As good as my Think Tank is I can image it being checked and being thrown in some cargo hold!
ok so I am in Iowa and nothing but ease at the airport and on plane. We road some thing that was not much bigger than a bus. Overhead barely fit my bag but we got it on and I did not have to check $20,000 worth of gear. Thank god.
I love this bag as it is comfortable and fits 3 cameras, 6 lenses and 3 flashes.
