p.1 #1 · 1-400mm L WOW!

HOLLY SH*T! guys I just received my 100-400mm IS USM to substitute my 70-300 IS (sold). Although it was a sad day letting go that awesome sharp 70-300 i'm already in love w the push pull L lens
I tested it a bit and now decided to break the news to you guys. I got a sharp copy wide open at 400mm! It's a UW code thus a 2008 product.
Although I played w my friend's 1-400mm before for a few times, I decided it was worth to buy one for myself !
My wife was hoping that this is the end of my lens quest, but I explained that this one was just a substitute for my 70-300 IS and that i'm still out there looking for a great deal for 300mm f2.8 or a 500mm! Needless to say she now wants a Gucci bag to compensate
Anyway, a few shots from last few days. Let me know what you think :

1. In flight pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) w the XT !

2. Italian Sparrow (Passer Italiae):

Lucky you!! That lens is notorious for being soft when used long. That first shot of the pheasant is really nice, love the exposure on it.

YO Nello what be up dawg ( Trying to keep up with the kid slang )

I too have the 100 - 400 IS and love it. It's a great walk around lens. For the longest time I felt it was Sub-Par and needed to go back to Canon. Only to find out it wasn't the lens but the photographer It was my first lens and I was new to photography >> I have since learned how important Shutter speed and correct exposure are. I think the 100 - 400 gets a bad rap with regards to good copy / bad copy because it's used a lot by newbies (Like I was and still am)

Anyway, congrats on the new toy!! Great shots !!

Anthony

sorry about your copy. Maybe you know this already but I think the 100-400 L needs quite fast shutter speeds. The IS is the old version (unlike the 70-300mm). From 1/200s and up it should give good results!

Thx Steve! it took me just a few clicks and I was in love I was affraid I won't really get used to the push-pull but now I actually prefer it over the classic way!
When the pheasant took off from the tall grass I was at 400 (from 100) in a blink of an eye really handy for Bifs I think!

Johnny I'd have to disagree w you. Both my friend's and my copy are great wide open at 400. If shutter speeds drop bellow 1/200s (on x1.6 crop) you can see some loss in sharpness. Also I found that the ammount of detail captured drops significantly when the subject fills only a small part of the frame (a few hundred pixels). This is where primes do better IMO
Glad you liked the pheasant. The exposure was - 2/3. You know how the XT tends to overexp.

Nello, congrats on the new lens!!!

That has got to feel great. These pics are great! Nice and sharp. Too bad about your wife, she needs to know your lust for lenses/camera bodies will never die. Just buy her a Gucci, her lust for that will never die! Hey I saw some very nice gentlemen in Roma selling them on the street for 50E! I'm sure their business partners MUST be in Milan.

Great news my friend, I'm sure you will be happy.

Like she would fall for the fake 1s Tim
She works in the luxury business...she can spot a fake bag from a mile away
She even points them to me as we walk on the street. To me they all look the same..just as all the birds look the same to her

Try this Nello: Take several shots of Gucci bags with your new lens, then Photoshop them with different color, shape or form (landscape, portrait), etc... whatever , and print pictures then post it int her closet, hopefully it will wear down her lust for the bag , OR it might be back-fire on you, your choice dude! I am jealous like hell

Anthony doin' great w the slangs I see
Same here w the 70-300 IS...at the beginning I thought it was so-so. After a while it seemed like it got sharper and sharper
Just the learning curve I guess.

Great images, Nello. Tack sharp and with great color. I have a situation and a question. I'm teetering on the brink of buying a 300 f2.8 for my sports shooting--given these shots, the main advantage I see to the 300 is the f2.8 for night games. What else in impelling you to search for a 300?
