Tom,

This is very informative. Is it possible to post a few pics of your most used setup if possible ?

Thanks

Tom,

This is some fantastic information. I personally would like to thank you for taking the time to write out and share your knowledge of photographing hummers.
I know this will be helpful to many FM members and so many more lurkers that don't have access to comment.

It's refreshing to read your post knowing your years of experience can help so many others jump start their knowledge and photography.

Thanks again

The photos are fantastic too. I will definately use this information in the NEAR future .................. And not in Costa Rica

Anthony

Tom,

Thanks for taking the time to type out the information and the willingness to share the information.

My only problem with all of that is, I don't have any hummingbirds coming to my yard! Yet.

This is most likely a naive question. you give data as "f/18, ISO 100, 1/8s 500mm". how the heck did you freeze this guy at 1/8 of a second!!!? Did you put something in the water??

Tom -

Thanks so much for this very informative tutorial. Now, you've intimidated me enough to not even try! Well, I will try, but it sure will be a while before I can absorb all these great tips. This post is a keeper.

Tom:

Thank you for sharing your technique, You are the new master!

Do you have a suggestion on flash placement that will maximize the chances of lighting up the iridescence on the throat patches of the Broad-tailed and Rufous?

When observing these in natural light, they are always beautiful, but when they are hit from the sun at just the right angle, the color "flashes" almost as bright as a strobe.

thanks,
Bill

What a great post. I won't be setting up a dozen or so 580EX's any time soon, nonetheless this was informative and interesting.

Now as far as experimenting with low apertures and flash - sure I'll give it a shot.

Cheers,

Josh

Thanks for the information. I started last year set feeders up. My wifes friend wanted pictures with the hummingbirds and these berries in a tree. I did what you did and pruned away leaves set up for in different times of the day. Ill have to try the flash I have 2 and will get a master. Thanks again.

Hi Tom,

This is very inspirational. Thank you for the great explanation. I enjoyed the shots on your 652541 post very much. One question so far: What do you use to attach the flash to the strips of metal in your setups above? Thanks so much!!!
