I was hoping someone would photograph half dome for this assignment. It is always one of my favorite objects to see and I like that you have not taken a cliched shot of the mountain. This is a wonderful composition. I like how you have caught nice light on half-dome and the foreground is terrific--I love the tree. I do wish the sky were a little more interesting. Perhaps a polarizer might have helped, but a fantastic shot, nonetheless. Good luck this week.
Thanks, Steve and Frank! Steve, if you're interested in shots of Half Dome, I've got FAR too many of them. I live and work in Yosemite. This is my first foray into the weekly assignments. I may go out once the skies clear for some night shots of Half Dome with star trails from Washburn Point on Glacier Point road.
I did use a polarizer, but forgot to twirl it before taking the shot. The light was changing and I was having issues with setting up my tripod on a granite slope!
As you can see by the cloud, it's not level. To straighten it would mean chopping off the top of the tree!
I'd also left the white balance on tungsten light from the previous night session, giving it that cold blue look. This took a bit of post production work to bring the colors back to something more realistic.
I'm glad you enjoy the shot!

I love the sky in the original shot and you might give this a try to bring it back. Pull the luminosity back in the blue channel and then up the saturation in this channel. That should add blue to just where blue is the strongest (i.e., the sky) this will work as long as the sky doesn't get posterized which it sometimes does when trying to correct in this way, so keep an eye on it. I hope this helps. By the way you have a very nice website. I especially liked the shot of the moonbow.
Steve,
Thanks for the advice. I tried your suggestion, but it introduced way too much noise. I'm thinking I may need to try another shot once the rain clears out. Only problem is that Tioga Pass is closed again because of snow!
