I have been pointed to this forum via a good photographic friend as I have a small problem that I am hoping someone can shed any light on the below :
I was given a memory card with RAW files on in a .CR2 format.
I copied over the files on XP to my pc, however after the copy was complete the memory cards were empty and only half of the images can be opened.
They all appear to be the correct file size. I am pretty sure that I didnt 'move' the files but cannot be sure - I can only think that something has caused the transfer to become corrupt.
I have tried opening the files in Bridge CS3, CS3, Photoshop, on Mac, PC and also in Aperature.
Try to get your hands on a recovery program like RescuePro from Sandisk or something similar and see what it can recover from the card before you use it again. The images may have been corrupt on the card already and nothing to do with your copy process.
I'd recommend Photorec. Worked for me. And it's free.
I have a couple of real Sandisk Extreme III cards and never had any problem with corrupt files after thousands of images. Until I got a card reader. Now It's happened to me twice over the last few months, once on each card. I'm wondering if it isn't somehow the card reader doing it to me. Still looking into it, and Kingston hasn't responded yet to my emailed inquiry about whether or not their card reader could be the culprit.
What saved me was Photorec. Awesome free software. It didn't salvage all the shots, but most of them. I'd recommend at least trying it for anyone having trouble recovering any files from their card.
The software is awkward, but there's a step by step guide, which was helpful, but still didn't clear up exactly how to use it. Guess I wasn't geek enough. I contacted the author, and he responded to my questions within 12 hours. I wrote a bit longer review about Photorec here.
