There's a trick to getting all to work.

First make sure you have the latest version of all the Canon utilities from canon.com.

1, hook the camera to the pc w/ USB.
2, turn on and boot the pc, don't launch any s/w
3, turn on the camera, the EOS Utility should launch automatically,
if not you have to specify what you want the PC to do whenever the camera connects. The camera control window isn't available unless the camera is connected, turned on, and recognized
4, take one picture and let it load on the PC automatically, this creates the capture directory
5, Open DPP or LightRoom to that capture directory and voila, your pictures appear

At least that's what happens at my house

If the icon is inactive, it probably isn't seeing the camera. Remember to go into the camera menu, set output preference to pc. Sometimes you have to turn the camera off and on once.

Oh yeah, if it doesn't work, it's probably the cable. Use the shortest cable btw the camera and PC, until you get a reliable connection, then try an extension. Some are OK, most aren't.
