p.1 #1 · Safes for Gear

Any recommendation of safes for gear storage?

One lift of the Tamarac and I can kiss $$$$$+ worth of gear goodbye.

Where are you located asim? That was the biggest factor for me when I decied to go with a safe. The humidity that is.

When I got married I jokingly registered for one of these. Sure enough someone got it for us. I'm fitting a 400mm f/5.6L, 300mm f/4L, 24-70mmL, a 17-40mmL, and a 70-200mm f/4L. Along with the two 1D/1D mkII bodies. Yeah its small but I'm fitting all of that in there.

I think its around 220-300. Everyone sells it from target to costco.

Where are you storing that? Couldn't someone just pick that puppy up if they wanted?

Yeah, it's bolted through a 2 inch slab. Yeah I suppose they could sledge hammer it, but I'm thinking if someone goes to all that trouble I'm either going to hear it or I'm just out of luck.

The real reason I have it is fire. I tuck in my gear at night in case my house burns down I still have the means to make money.

I'm in MD, so not too bad on humidity. I was just looking at one of the Sentry ones also. Seems reasonably priced too. Water, Fire, and Flood.

Of course, it's much cheaper once you shop around, such as Office Depot.

Those are the exact reasons I store my gear; fire, water... in that order. Home owners/Renters insurance is great, but you're still going to have to sit on your butt a few days while they cut you a check.

They are definetaly priced right. A gun safe is a better option if you don't want to hunch down...

Also make sure when you get a safe to get some of those little moisture wicking bags and those little bags they put in boxes... what are they called again?

The local Brinks service offers a wedding photog export and protection service - only $300 a pop and worth every nickel.

Ok, found a deal at Staples for one that looks pretty good. $300 after rebate.

Search for Item 611910 Model OA5848 at staples.com

When I started looking for a safe, I marked that one I saw at Staples. Good price. I think I might pull the trigger on that.

I doubt for that price that safe will do any good though. Sure it's fire proof, as a selling feature. It only means that the fire won't get in there, Unfortunately a lot of safes will heat up so much inside that your gear will be toast anyways. Maybe I'm wrong but I think a safe with "climate" control that keeps your stuff cool in the heat of a fire will be a bit more than $300

"ETL verified for 2 hour fire protection of CDs, DVDs, and USB drives up to 1,850øF"

2 hours @ 1850 F sounds pretty decent.

That Staples one looks pretty good. I may have to pull the trigger on it also. How much gear do you guys reckon it could hold?

I'm planning to buy a gun safe at Gander Mountain. The business safes I priced at Sam's Club and Staples weren't large enough. I figure a big safe that's bolted to the floor will discourage thieves.

This one indicates it comes with bolting hardware. I was considering something larger, but it's more expensive and it's asking for more attention. This one seems like it will fit right in a closet and out of the way.
Liza, did you by any chance see this one while you were at Staples?

I'm going to go tomorrow and likely pull the trigger on it.

The ONLY thing that concerns me is the 4 AA batteries it takes...what happens when they die??

It looks like the same volume of a decent sized carry on camera back pack.
2-3 bodies, 4-5 lenses at least. I'm thinking Tetris packing if needed.

Hmm - if you see it tomorrow in-person please let us know Asim...I won't have a chance to get to Staples anytime soon.

These safes have a key too (You can see it on the pics above just below the handle). This can be used to open the safe so you can replace the batteries inside
