Good Morning, Evening or Afternoon FM peeps.

Took another trip to the butterfly gardens on Saturday and wanted to share the results with you guys.

I had so many, but narrowed it down to these 18.

All shots taken hand held with the M3 and 300mm f4 + 25mm tube.

Truly fantastic series, was there any flash used here??

I dont think that lens is sharp enough, i hear Canon Australia do a fine job of calibration, i'll be happy to pass it along for you

Thanks for the comment Dan. Very little flash was used, - 1 to 2 stops on the flash. I also used a mini soft box on the flash.

The lens is getting a tad soft..

I'll pass on the calibration

but thanks for the offer.

Chad, these are stunning! Wonderfully captured. You set a high bar to meet. I plan on using the same lens/extender combo on some butts this summer. Thanks for givng me a difficult standard to meet.

The saturation is super in all of these
what is your mfd with the 25mm tube?

Mirek, thanks for the kind words. We love this combo, only problem with it.. you are limited to how far you can focus away.

All of these were shot at some what different f stops ranging form f5.6 to f 9

Yes, you have to really watch your focus when shooting this rig. Even worse, shoot the 100mm macro at 5.6 and you get a very very narrow DOF.

I just put this rig together on my camera and did a quick test for you. I measured 3 feet from subject to front glass. Keep in mind you have to use "one shot" or manual to get your closest focus, "AI servo" never seems to reach MFL.

Chad, these are spectacular. Fantastic light, details, comps - you got it all. I went to a butterfly exhibit yesterday, took a lot of pictures but haven't had a chance to take a look at them. Now I'm afraid to...

No problem

yes, the 300mm gets much closer with the tubes than the 400mm.
