Yes handheld shots have always worked best for me. I tried the 70-300mm IS + Kenko Tc on a tripod and the results from the handheld shots at 1/320s were actually better! I'm pretty sure handheld shots w the 500mm F4 IS + Tc would be great also if you keep the shutter speed around 1/500s or up (f5.6 and ISO 200/400)...that is if you can handheld that beast for long enough
Of course without IS all this would be impossible (Sigmonster or 400m prime)
