This graph only goes back 5 years but dollar was weaker than this graph, My copies of wire transfers to the US show the dollar was actually 55-58c in 2003
That would put the 1D at 9.5K AUD just on conversion alone that doesn't take into consideration the usuall shafting that Canon put on top.
So yeah never let the truth get in the way of a good story, well there is my source of info even though a journo should never reveal their sources

Well I would assume like Mark, that a newspaper photog whom you know from The Central Coast Express would have known how much they were. There are plenty of Aussie photogs on here who WOULD know like me how much the 1D originally came in at.
Anyway the links are above I know what I paid for my stuff I have the reciepts.

Well, I worked for the Express for around 2 years and I can tell you that we didnt take muct notice of how much photo gear cost as we got our own kit and could take it home etc. That, and the Express used Nikon so they would have no idea how much a Canon camera cost.
Canon have prices listen on their site that are no where near even the release prices of cameras. Sorry but I am calling bullshit on that price on the 1D
here is a link to a fred Miranda review on the 1Ds at the bottom it shows price comparison between 1D and 1Ds. The 1Ds is at $8000USD the 1D is at $4500USD factor in the exchange rate at .59 and see where you get to.
The simple fact that you've been shooting with a 10D for god knows how long and recently went to a 20D and that the 1D came out 5-6 years ago would tells me that you would have NO idea what they listed for. You didn't buy one. I did. So I reckon I got slightly more of a clue how much they were.
At the same time Canon Australia wanted to charge $22000 for a 600/4IS. I spose thats crap aswell. Which is why I bought every peice of my gear from the USA were I didn't get shafted.
Canon only changed their prices a few years ago when they could see lots of Aussies were buying OS.
Not me, But the guy I bought my 1D from. Not sure if he was the original owner, but sold for 7500 back in the day. I got it for 650. So thats 6950 lost over 7 years.
I just sold my XTI. Bought it last june for 700. Sold it for 500.
