Well I guess I get to complete another DIY Project.
I have full confidence in my abilities, my only concern is getting self adhesive grippy parts to stick back on really well. Since the 20d will soon be relegated to my backup backup camera I am not going to worry to much if it is not cosmetically perfect.
Well, I decided to play around with my 10D this morning and it seems it decided to fix itself! I have to the shutter button a little bit harder, but it fires again! Yay! There seems to be a bit of a delay, but it's usable.

Well, I got the bad news....Minimum charge of 290.00 + tax + shipping for a grand total of 325.00. I mulled it over for a while, but went ahead and had them do the work. I guess I'll use the camera more now that the shutter is working correctly.
The guy I bought it from is being pretty nice about it, he is chipping in SOME for the repair. (It came from him like this).
It should be done in a week they say.

is there a contact email for canon to send it in? i guess i can give them a call as well. my 40D does the same thing, and i think i can have it repaired under warranty.. good thing i have an xti backup.

I have the shutter switch part at home that I didn't have the guts to put in, if you're brave.

With the price Canon's quoting for a repar I'd go for it... worst case scenario you knacker the camera and have to buy another for about the price of the repair. Best case scenario it's easier than it looks and you've saved yourself some money.
Fiddling with electronic gizmos is not rocket science when you have instructions. Patience is the most important thing.
Well, I got it back from Canon, and it's like new again. Feels just like my 30D now.
All in all, I'm not sorry I sent it to them. Now I can leave the 28-70L on it full time and the long lens on the 30D.
Same issue with 30D five months out of warranty. $208.65 to repair; replaced shutter release, cleaned, checked and firmware update. Canon had the camera for a total of four days. Two day return shipping California to Ohio. Works like new, 10D still works like new after 4+ years…
Anyone know the part number for this little guy? I'm planning on replacing mine in my 20D....$235.00 for Canon to replace and my camera having at least 140,000 actuations...so, the $6.00 part vs. $235.00 for me...no contest since the camera is pretty shot anyway. It's still works perfectly other than the button insides being broken.
I read a week or two ago somewhere...that the part was $6.00 and I didn't write down the part number. I may just have to call Canon without the part number.
Earlier this week I ordered a new trigger button from Canon and it showed up today - I was pretty impressed with the turn around time on shipping. What was really impressive is the packaging it was delivered in:
I did the repair today, about an hour from beginning to end. Total cost was about $40 - and two small burns on my finger. It would have only been $11 but I needed to buy an soldering iron, solder, and flux.
Spring loaded tweezers would have been helpful when trying to hold the new button in place.
The PDF also suggests prepping the switch with solder, I disagree. When you remove the old switch there will, most likely be, a small bit of solder left on the ribbon. You can simply remelt it to hold the switch in place. Add additional solder if needed after the fact.
Anyway, all done. The camera works like brand new. I could not be happier.
