p.1 #1 · Lobby Chandelier

Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado, California

The lobby of this historic hotel is absolutely amazing. If it wasn't for the modern outfits of the people walking around, I would've felt like I traveled back in time. In the center of the hotel lobby sits a huge bouquet of flowers under a very impressive chandelier. Bouquet of flowers... bokeh with flowers... same thing right?

Very nice, creative vision. I lie the desaturated look and choice of depth of field. There is a wonderful interplay between the buds light bubbling alongside. If there were a version without or less of the dark center of the chandelier I'd like to see it. But as is, it offesr nice balance of dark and light and along a diagnonal.

I'm not going to be mean...

but I wonder how the shot would have looked with the tip of the plant in focus. It looks like the way you did it could have been close to the "lensbaby" effect.

it's not close to the lensbaby effect at all. it's just using a shallow DOF.

The tip of the plant goes towards the chandelier, which is why it's a bit out of the field of focus. Doing this I give it some depth of going upwards, rather than it being on one plane infront of me, and then chandelier another, that would look odd and again, I'm shooting this from below.

I think that it may not have the dramatic effect of distance if the tip was in focus. that was my thinking.

and no, not mean at all haha =) thank you for that suggestion.

I like it!

Just wonderin, are the vertical streaks because of a high ISO setting?

it's actually a texture added to the photo. i've been playing around with a little photoshop these days. I think it makes the shot look like it has a bit of "history", especially since this was taken at Hotel Del Coronado, in Coronado, CA. It's super old school looking.

I wasn't sure if the texture would work, but I guess maybe.

In photoshp it's the vertical grain with very slight intensity / contrast.

Hmm.. Personally, I feel like they distract a bit. I like the shot, but maybe could do without the vertical streaks...
