p.1 #1 · Cap & gown?

For those that do formal senior portraits where do you buy your cap and gowns?
Do you buy the polyester or a better, heavier gown?
Tried "search" and didn't come up with anything.
Thanks,
Forest

The student usually brings their own if they want a cap & gown shot.

I personally don't supply any props. I do encourage people to bring them if they want one. Why use one of mine that has no meaning to them. If they bring it, then its more likely part of them and means much more.

If they want cheesy props over quality photographs they can go to Sears.

We get ours from Jostens, which has a local office. If you call the activities director at your local high school they should have some other local suggestions or the name of the local rep.

I worked for a studio that did a lot of Senior portraits and Cap and Gown shots were excellent sellers. They had a pretty big selection (about a dozen colors and several of each) and most of what they had were choir robes since they held up longer. Graduation gowns are not made real well since they're not really meant to be worn more then once. It was worth it for them since they had about two dozen accounts and photographed thousand and thousands of kids a year. Enough people would chose a Cap and Gown shot to justify having them in stock.

We also get ours from Jostens. We have a supply to match all the local high schools.....and we also have the matching tassels.
We then purchase the "year" attachments for the tassels every year to stay current.

The cap and gowns are pretty inexpensive and usually the student does not have them to bring with them.

Most of my clients come to us because they were totally unhappy with the "hired gun" who has the school contract.......and they also come to have portraits done also.

Thanks for the info. Do you guys buy the cheaper polyester gowns? Or do you buy the heavier cotton (I think) gowns for the durability?
Thanks,
Forest
