Here's what the Contax Zeiss 85/2.8 can do for you. This was handheld shooting in shade.

Just to add some perspective on these lenses, here is the relevant info from Zeiss. As you can see the designs of the 85.2.8 and 90/2.8G are very similar, as I indicated earlier (not identical due mainly to difference in flange distance and focal length). The MTF's are however, very nearly identical (the nod might got to the 85/2.8 but the difference might not be readily observable in images). Distortion and light fall-off curves are also virtually identical. Of course there are other factors that go into the IQ of both lenses. I've tossed in the information on the other Zeiss Sonnar lens of this basic design -- the 100/3.5 Sonnar. Looking at the MTF's of the 100/3.5, it is fairly clear that it is the best of the 3 (at least, in narrow MTF's terms).

Hi everyone -
I am new here but I wanted to add that I, too, was inspired by that guy who converted this lens to fit CANON EOS. ( see post from apras, Jan. 20 )
To the point that I bought a metal lathe, 6 !!! Sonnars 90 ( boy, was I confident..! ) and began to re-machine the first.
A lot, a lot, a lot of work.
I started a second one - then I stopped, sold the rest of the original ones and finished one.

If anyone is interested I can send pictures, but cannot post any here.

I have a second one to fit EOS, but for the moment it is stuck to infinity...
Please let me know if anyone wants to look at the lens on a CANON Rebel XT - I know it's old, but I sold nearly all my gear, due to eye surgery.
Gabriel

The measured FL of the 90 and the 85 actually very nearly split the difference compared to their official FL's. And the difference in register is minimized by the 90's deeply recessed rear element vs. the 85's flush with the mount rear element. Whatever difference is only the slightest tweak.

By now a new factor has emerged. The ability to mount the G 90 on Sony A7s with a focusing adapter. Tremendous bang for the buck IMHO if you get used to focusing onthe adapter, which isn't wonderful.

It really depends on the adapter. The Ulata adapter is very nice to use. No binding, quite smooth. The cheaper adapters worked pretty well too, but I found that you had to permanently pair an adapter to each G lens. With the Ulata, I use one only adapter for my 28, 45, and 90 while getting very smooth focusing.

I'll have to give that a look!
