p.1 #1 · can't click and drag with mac?

I just got my first mac and for some reason it won't let me click and drag files or folders. The mouse prefrences are configured for dragging but it just won't work. Anyone have any idea what Im doing wrong?

What mouse are you using?

Apple's phone service is great, BTW. Someone will answer quickly, from someplace here in the US, and will actually want to help. It's a real pleasure to call them. Just another reason I'll never buy another PC (sorry, but Dell had that shot coming).

if you are using a laptop, you should just be able to click, move your finger where you want the file to go, and let your hand of the clicker thing. Dont forget about 2 finger scrolling! If you're using the mighty mouse, should just be able to click and drag.

Another mac story, Im on my 4th macbook. I haven't had to pay for one, and apple has been amazing. I now know most of the employee's by first name.

Yea its the weirdest thing... Doesnt work with the touchpad or my laser mouse. I have gone through every single system preference there is and everything looks fine. I took your advise though and called apple. Unfortunately they are not available after 6. So I will try again in the morning.

what happens instead? Does it show an error message? Does it show little outlines of what you select (when you start to drag)? Does it allow you to select files?

It allows to select files. I can click them and they ten blue, but that's it. It doesnt give me an error message or anything either, it just does absolutely nothing. I also tried copy and pasting files into different folders and it won't let me do that either. Its really weird...

You have to hold the click/mouse/pad down while you move, then release after it's where you want it.

Yup! That's what I have been doing. Click and hold, drag and release. Nothing. I'll call apple as soon as I get out of the gym. Its probably something silly.

If you have an user account set up without administrative priveledges, you cannot move folders in and out of the main HD folder. Check to see you you do have administrative priveledges in System Prefs>>Accounts.

Yup! I am the Admin, and I went through all the settings to make sure there wasn't anything fishy in there, but all seems well!

So right now I'm on the phone with apple and they don't seem to know what's going on either.

This is probably a stupid suggestion, but your mouse is ON one of the files, correct?

Haha, yes, the little black pointer is on the file I am trying to move.

Anyway, I just got off a 50 minute phone call with mac, and they basically said they have no idea what is wrong, they've never heard of this issue, and they want me to send it to repair. Which kinda sucks... I'm going to be without a laptop for probably two or so weeks. I'm bringing it to the apple store on Tuesday. Hopefully I can find an alternative solution to the problem before then.

Just a thought- go to a coffee house/cyber cafe and see if there are any Mac geeks hanging out there, and let them try it on your laptop.

http://www.apple.com/retail

thats the apple store locator. Thing I love about macs? Anything they can do at the genius bar is free. I've gotten free HD's, free keys, etc. Make sure you book a appointment in advance though!

Sounds like a great idea! But how do I do all of that? I'm completely new to mac, I have no idea how to run disc aid repair or where to find the mend file permissions thing.

1) To reboot, press the power button and choose shut down. Once it has finished shutting down, press power again.

2) Once you are logged in, choose 'Utilities' from the 'Go' menu in the menubar at the top of the screen. The Utilities folder will open. type D I S K on the keyboard, quickly, and Disk Utility should be highlighted. Double click it. A window will open. Click on your main ('startup') hard disc on the left, and then press the button which will appear on the right labelled 'Repair disc permissions' and wait for it to do so.

3) You may need to reboot to see if it has helped.

4) If it hasn't then you should probably run disc first aid at startup. To do so, reboot the machine as before, and hold down Command+S as it boots. You should then see it boot into a scary unix text interface. Wait for it to stop spewing text, and then type

fsck -fy <return>

which is unixese for File System ChecK -force-yes

Let that run till you get a $ prompt back, and then type

reboot now <return>

Hope that fixes it, but if it doesn't, I would advise reinstalling the system software that came on the discs with your Mac. If that doesn't work, ask Apple for a new Mac.

out of interest, which method fixed it? I'm guessing it was the permissions repair. Your symptoms sound like you just didn't have permission to drag anything anywhere.

Your right on, the permissions repair took care of it. I saved all that you wrote for future reference, and thanks again. You saved me from having to send my laptop out to repair!
