That could never have been said about Canon's 24-70 f/2.8 L (I had three copies). I would love to finally have a sharp 24-70 zoom.
Well at a 50% higher price I would hope the Nikon 24-70 is overall a better lens. The Canon version is no slouch, however, but Canon's biggest problem is QC... the "sharp copy or not" syndrome is certainly overplayed in various forums but seems to exist to some extent.

If Canon continues to perform incremental updates to their cameras, they will soon find themselves outpaced - they already have by Nikon!
Canon is in a catch 21... if they do not make drastic changes/improvements/evolution to their new dSLR, others will outpace them, and on the other hand, if they make drastic improvements in their new dSLR (ie. AF & noise) it will alienate past year's Canon buyers, and will leave them with a bad and sour feeling for purchasing when they did...
Nikon has pulled a nice move on them by releasing cameras that even today will be pretty hard to match by Canon at reasonable prices!
I was just on dp review reading old post on the 1Ds Mark111 rumours. It was being claimed by some who claimed insider knowledge that it was going to be 32 megapixels. Fact is we won't know what the 5D upgrade will be like other than an improvement on an already great camera until Canon announce it.
And when that happens we can spend the next two to three years reading the rumours on what the upgrade to that unit will be.
Is it not possible for you people to stop pulling pud and just wait 3 weeks and see if it's actually announced at PMA? Until then, this is all a futile exercise.
A novel idea is to go out and actually shoot with your camera instead of spending all your time pondering and posing rumours on a camera that isn't even confirmed as existing.
Put the keyboard down and pick up your camera. It's nice out there in the big wide world.

I bought a gently used 5D a couple of months ago for $1,450. Had just a tad under 15,000 exposures on it. Few weeks ago I bought a 5D with grip for $1,220 that had 49,000 clicks on it. Once replacement to 5D actually hits the streets the used 5D's will probably drop to under $1,000. That's a great price for a great camera, whether the prime camera or a back-up.

How authentic is this informatin in the first place?
I dont see how the 5D 'upgrade' at $ 1900 is reasonable vs current 5D priced at $ 2180 in Jan 2008?
I thought this thread was discussing one part of the two tier 5D upgrade rumor with the 7D representing the lower priced version. Th 5D mk II would be the higher priced version (at around $3000).
I still think your comment is correct. Even a lower priced upgrade doesn't make sense at less than $1900.
I'm sure there will be 2 consumer FF cameras for sale soon. One of them was released 2 1/2 years ago... this is the alledged '7D'. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Maybe they'll drop in price like the original digital rebel =)

Would that be an ego thing Why would one need any respect from a photo web site anywhere? Guess I just don't understand.... Hmmmmmmm I get alot of respect where I shoot and get paid, seems far more appropriate, but that's just me I guess!

If it's only going to be $1,899, I'll be first in line for sure...I mean, if it's true that is.
I'm very very happy with my 40D but at that price it will be very tempting to move to FF.
I'm convinced that Canon is going to eventually make an entry level FF camera. A Rebel FF of sorts (I'm not suggesting that Canon is going to abandon the EF-S mount). If Canon isn't first to do this, I think Sony will likely be the only other company capable to bringing this to the market within the next year. However, Canon would make a big mistake in releasing an entry level FF that has only average AF.

It would if Canon is determined to stop the Nikon onslaught dead in its tracks. After all, it's just a matter of time before BOTH Nikon and Canon releases inexpensive "consumer grade" full-frame DSLRs.
The Nikon onslaught? Conjures up images of lots of blood and guts.
I'm not sure anyone's slaughtering anyone... Nikon is finally rounding out its dSLR portfolio and has gotten a huge boost from the cheap'n'cheerful D40. Canon was never gonna be able to stay so far ahead for long. However, I now expect Canon to lead the charge to more affordabel FF bodies, which it arguably already has done with the 5D.
Even at $2500-$3000, a new version of the 5D will still be the cheapest FF body by far, and will probably remain so for years, so I doubt Canon will price it any lower.

This is a good point, all the talk about a direct 5D replacement doesn't factor in that Canon may be likely leave the 5D in their product line up for a while at a low price point of under 2K and calling this their "entry level" FF. I was surprised at how long Canon left the D Rebel XT in their line up as their lowest priced SLR after the XTi was release. I think it must have been at least a full year.
Maybe its just me, but regardless of the features, I could care less about the terapixels a camera might have really. The excitement over that is just ludicrous. Can you take a really good photo with a 10-20-30-40D? 5D? 1? DO you have an idea about framing, composition, and capturing a moment that will never come again?
All this stuff is nice, but its corporate huey getting people all excited because they have stockholders breathing down their necks. I highly doubt Canon is making a 2D or 4D. Unless they are replacing the low end cameras with a new designation to make it look like they are making better consumer level camera for Joe Smith and the wife and kids. That would be the likely marketing ploy behind it. Most of the execs could care less about anything but parting you from the money in your wallet, bank account, or CC.
