I found out this morning that my helicopter is equipped with the same triage equipment the special forces use. Every medical tool available including visual monitoring and real time stats going straight to one of the finest emergency medical facilities in the world, located in Phoenix. Both my pilot and my safety pilot are uber trained EMS folks. (deleted).

Correct me if I am wrong, but the pilot and safety pilot were both in the front of the helicopter. How long would it take them to realize something was wrong with you, find a safe place to set down, and actually put their hands on you? All the fancy equipment in the world is useless, if the person who knows how to operate it is stuck in the front of the helicopter.

I would be willing to bet that if you had told them of your condition, they would have refused to take off.

Take care,
Ken

My safety pilot/crew member was in the rear compartment focused on anything that I might need. He helps me into my harness and makes sure that I have the appropriate amount of lead for where I want to be, along with anything else I might need during the mission. He was sitting right next to me watching my every move. I was probably safer in that helicopter than I would have been driving to the ER if I had become symptomatic.

…... 221 you say …... humm.....

So Jim, in my head I have you getting a call from that nice young Mr Perdue – all in the style of Bob Newhart.

“Hi Gunny, how you doing? Yes thanks, I had a great time – real nice airplane – lots of fun. Oh you just got back from the hanger. The A&P chief says it WAS a nice airplane. What speed was I doing? Well I guess I may have just nudged up around 221 at the bottom of the dive. Gee Gunny, yes I know Vne is 150. No, I didn’t land at the nearest available. Oh, I’m grounded? I’m so grounded that I’m making a tent peg look liberated? OK, well, thanks for talking to the chef – err why did he call? He’s doing dinner tonight and wants to know if I like my worms sauté? “

Now, I know I can say the above because:- (1) We are the same age – all bar a few months. (2) 160 is still WAY to high. (3) I asked you to slow down YEARS ago! I’m very glad that you got help in time and I’m look forward to hearing all about those river cruses (note plural) that your about to take.

Then again, as sick as I am right now, I may have yanked you off that chopper, hauled you up over my shoulders, and driven you to the ER myself. Luckily all appears to have turned out well and your pilot didn't have to divert to an emergency room's helipad for you. We're getting to the age where our bodies aren't what we want them to be, no matter how much of a superhero workerbee we want to be.

Thank you Anwar, I went to sleep early, 10:45pm, and got up about 9:00AM. Today is the last day of the amoxicillin, hurray! Just going to rest and recuperate. The Blackbird is my favorite plane too, and I get at least one shot of it every time I'm there.

Nobody in my circle of acquaintance could afford the fuel to taxi it to the end of the runway, much less take off.

Yeah, considering they carry enough fuel at launch for take off, you also get to pay for the refuel tanker!

What is amazing is I read these aircraft were shot at (I believe surface to air missiles or SAM) over 1000 times, yet none were ever shot down. I guess the speed and altitude thingy worked well!

Ok, ok, ok......I get the point I'm 144/86 right now and I just spent 45 minutes dragging all of my gear to the next model.

In a fatalistic sort of way, as I walked to the Heli on Sunday it kind of flashed through my mind that if this was to be my last day, I felt great, was about to embark on a couple hour flight to do what I do on an beautiful afternoon, Sheila would be very comfortable, not a terrible end to my story. Much preferable to wasting away from some disease, slowly losing the ability to do all of the things that I love. It was an uncharacteristic moment of lucidity actually, kind of caught me by surprise.
