p.1 #1 · CS2 Preferences Keep Changing

I seem to run into stretches where my CS2 preferences keep changing back to the defaults. Things like Zoom With Scroll Wheel, or the Bridge Workspace, or the jpg save quality. The Welcome Screen launches, even though I had unchecked the Show This Dialog at Startup box. Usually everything holds from session to session, but occasionally (like now) they change back to the defaults most of the time.

I don't think I'm doing anything differently. It seems to happen randomly. Any idea what's going on?

Thanks!

Mark

I have been having the same problem with my CS2 & now my CS3. Not all the time but once in awhile it reverts to the default. I have searched the Photoshop forum and support but failed to find a solution.

I wish that there is a way that I can save my reference to a file and use it to reset everything to what I like whenever the unintentional reset to default happens again.

Same here. I have my workspace saved and have to revert to it every now and then. But what really annoys me is when I get the message "C drive is getting low on disk space" because CS2 has reverted back to the default page file and scratch disk setttings. Frustrating...

msalvetti,

Here's what PSCS2 Help says:

About preferences
Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs file, including general display options, file-saving options, cursor options, transparency options, and options for plug‑ins and scratch disks. Most of these options are set in the Preferences dialog box. Preference settings are saved each time you quit the application.
Unexpected behavior may indicate damaged preferences. If you suspect damage to preferences, restore preferences to their default settings.
____________________________________________________________________

So from this I am suspecting that your Preferences folder could perhaps be damaged & PS defaults might need to be reset.
____________________________________________________________________

And again from Adobe Understanding the Photoshop CS2 Installation & Removal Process here,

3. Preferences and Activation options.

In the Uninstall Preferences screen, you can keep all your preferences files that you've been using, or you can remove them. If you choose to keep your preferences, then Photoshop will look the way you've customized it when you open Photoshop after you reinstall it. If you remove your preferences, all Photoshop preferences will be set to the default settings. The advantage of removing your preferences is that sometimes these files can become damaged, causing problem in Photoshop. A common troubleshooting technique is to delete the preference files. Click the appropriate button, and click Next.

___________________________________________________________________

So deleting the Preferences file within the Photoshop folder & when you restart it will all be recreated as a fresh install. Even if you only want to change a few settings it may be that your folder is corrupted & needs to be reset or tossed & restarted.

OutsideShooter, thanks for the references. I probably should have looked harder for those myself.

I was a bit surprised that I wasn't alone having this problem; hopefully your post helped a bunch of us today.

Thanks again,

Mark
