p.1 #1 · Better Beamers

Hi all,

I understand it is the Better Beamer FX-3 which fits the 580EX flash, is there a different model of BB for a Canon 580EX 2 flash?

Also, are there any potential 'don't do's' that I need to be aware of using the Better Beamer? I did read something on the Birds as Art site about flash head overheating.....

Thanks in advance.

Is this the same model for the EX2 flash?

Any advice on using a BB?

Be careful that the sun does not shine into the fresnel lens of the BB as it can focus the sun's light & heat onto the flash it is mounted on.

Also, Dont leave it on a table where the sun would shine in during the morning or you will have a burnt mark on one of your plastic flash cases, and bloody lucky you did'nt burn the house down! Don't ask!

A few seconds in the microwave and the FX-2 will fit a 580.

As mentioned above, be careful using a BB for fill fash with subjects backlit by the sun. I managed to melt a hole in the body of my SB-600 that way. No functional damage done, but it does have an ugly blemish now.

Hi Alistair.

The BB is a three-piece arangement (more if you count the velcro) including a fresnel lens and two side brackets to attach it to the flash unit. There is a big gap between the fresnell lens and the flash unit, and no restriction of air flow around the flash unit, and so over-heating is no more an issue than without the BB.

However, a bright light such as the sun or maybe a floodlamp shining into the front of the fresnel lens will be concentrated onto the flash unit and may burn out the front of the flash. If are not using it then take the fresnel lens off and/or cover it.
